Default loosing water.

Pulled the head. Block has several repaired cracks, and the head needs resurfacing. I think the combination is the reason for the loss of coolant/ overheating.

Any of these could be the culprit, but if you already know the head
needs to be milled, I'd start with that and a new gasket properly torqued
might be the cure. Good luck.

The block is not usable. one cylinder has a crack that goes from the exhaust valve into the cylinder(#3). If I can't find a usable motor the owner will probably part out the huckster.

Finding a crack free block is getting hard to do but they are still out there. The current issue of the Model A Times has an article showing the most common locations for cracks to occur to help you when you are looking at a possible replacement. There is also an article on the new block that is in development and will eliminate the frustration with locating a good core.

Thanks john. Until I pulled the head and cleaned and scraped everything I was hopeful. This block must have been overheated a bunch. Very little ridge in the cylinders, but the cracks are very noticable and felt easily with my thumb nail. A hard seat at each exhaust valve (#2, and #3), and a 1 pin repair at each crack next to the hard seat, tell me the rebuilder should have caught this, and probably did.

There are blocks all over the place. Engines can also be had ready to install with no core needed, why would he part it out?

Mike, You'll need to ask him. I think dealing with health problems has something to do with it. I'm looking for a reasonablely priced replacement. Maybe I'll get lucky. So far no good leads have come my way.
