Kingpins stuck in axle
here is what seems to be a simple problem. I am disassembling an axle assembly. All went by the usual scheme until I came to removing the kingpins. Yes I have removed the keepers from the axle.
The kingpins refuse to turn or move. The axle is bent beyond repair but the spindles are in good shape. I need to get the spindles off undamaged. I've tried heat on the axle and leverage on the spindle head but no progress. Anyone want to share some tried and true methods? |

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
tried an air hammer? soaking with penetrent and air hammer should work. If not a big ol brass punch and small sledge hammer usually gets things moving. Maybe a pipe wrench on the top to get it to rotate and spray liberally with penetrent.
just make sure someone hasnt welded things together.

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
Another thought is using a press. If you dont have one since the axle is junk cut the spindles off the axle so they are manageable pieces and take them to a machine shop or auto repair place - they should have a hyd press to push them out with.

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
You might try placing a floor jack below the king pin with something like a deep well socket of the right diameter (one slightly narrower than the king pin) in between. Then raise the jack to put pressure on the king pin. Then hammer on the axle. Some heat and Kano lubricant wouldn't hurt also. Worked for me.

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
I have a valve guide driver for a Kubota tractor that fits the A kingpin exactly. The step on it is kind of concave,so if any metal tries to move it will tend to move inward, instead of mushrooming outward. It's had a lot of sledgehammering, and is holding up well. What I would like to know is how guys are supporting the axle in a press.I have a couple of good presses, and a lot of oddball tooling, but I've never found a way to press the pin out without either cutting the head off first,or cutting the thrust bearing out to get a split anvil under it.

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
Since the axle is junk, I'd try heating the eye area till red and hammering it. The eye should open up enough for the king pin to be taken out so long as the end of it hasn't already been mushroomed.

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
Why not good, new spindles (or very good used, already disassembled) and new kingpins? There are subtle differences by year..

Re: Kingpins stuck in axle
Thanks for the good advice.
I was able to use an old bushing driver that had an end about the same size as the pin. Laid the axle on the ground and whacked on the driver with a big hammer. The decades of rust, crud and petrified grease finally gave way and the pin came out. Turn and repeat. Cleaning and blasting for reassembly is the next task. |
