I used Reds Headers on my '42 and their extensions clear the pedals just fine. Here is a link for the earlier version of extension, hope it helps?

I have looked at a 39 and it has more room for the pipe then a 40. The car is stock other then an AB engine. I know this conversion can and has been done several times and something is being overlooked. You would be hard pressed to fit a 1" pipe through and around the hole.
I agree. It would not make sense to snake a pipe thru because it would restrict your exhaust. You would have less restriction with a larger pipe thru the right side only. No way it would work on my 40 wagon either.

Here's a 34 P/U we did a number of years ago. You need
to take a hole saw and elongate the hole towards the
outside frame rail and it will lay in there nice. You want
to clamp the fuel line out of the way so it don't get hot.

Do you have forward stay rods?

Unless I missed it, nobody mentioned Red's headers. I bought their headers and exhaust pipes for the '40 coupe, and the exhaust pipe on the driver's side is already pre-bent to go right through that hole in the frame and clear all those issues. I had to use 12" mellow tone mufflers from Vanpelt to fit in the X-member of the frame without cutting anything. The guys at Tubular Automotive in Weymouth MA mandrel bent the tailpipes, and all the pieces fit great. PM me if you would like a photo of how the system clears the clutch area. Russ

Headers may be on the agenda down the line. The shop did use 1 7/8 pipe in the tight spot then stepped up to two inch to the back with 12" glass packs. Reversed the eye on rear spring and now doing the front spring. All worked out good and installed WEEDETR tube shock kit on the rear.

Really no need for the larger diameter exhaust on a flathead, it is not going to flow that much. I run the smaller dia on my engines. Old HAMB post:

"If sounds are a concern, go with 1 3/4 tail pipes. I did several flatties using 2" duals. Bigger is better! Right? They never had the classic flatty sound. Disappointing to me and my customers. Until the guy with his 51 Merc insisted he wanted 1 3/4" pipes just as he had in 1955. Bingo! it sounded just like 1955. The original single exhaust was 1 3/4" so with duals you have doubled the capacity..."

I used Reds extension pipes for stock manifolds on the pickup. There were no clearance problems.

Reds headers, exhaust pipes, 12" mellow tone mufflers & mandrel bent tailpipes, can't beat that sound.
