Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
I have a seized tir rod end plug (the threaded end that screws down against the inner spring/ball). I am currently cutting out the plug and want to chase the inner threads before installing a new plug. What is the thread size? It appears to be fine pipe threads but I could be wrong...

Here is an old "thread" on the subject..
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23581 I don't think they ever got around to answering your question, but these recent pictures show what I measured...that is a SAE 20 pitch gauge....hard to read in the picture. .

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
It is straight thread not pipe.

Assuming you don't have one, The tool of choice would be an enormous screw driver tip that fits a 1/2" ratchet, fits like a glove is by far the best.

I already broke the Bratton's Tie Rod End socket adapter tool. What I got is an end plug that will turn out about 1/4 of a turn and then just dead stops. It HAS to be the threads that are jacked-up. I can turn it back and forth...but, again, no more than 1/4 turn total of travel. I already bent a nice Snap-on screwdriver before I got the Bratton's tool.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
The end plug has 60 threads per inch, so measure the major thread diameter to get the rest of the story.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
Bob, didn't you mean to say 20 threads per inch? 1955cj5 showed a thread pitch gauge on the nut 20 threads per inch.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
There is such a thing as a 1"-20 H4, Plug Chamfer Tap. This has to be what they used back in the day. A tap like that runs nearly $50!!! Let's hope it's not the threads...the attempt to insert a new plug will tell all.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
That's what I was kind of getting at... I just like to preserve the original parts if I can...within reason of course... A local machine shop I called says they'll chase the threads for me for $10 and a Coke.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
I think you need a 1 1/16x24 tap? Bratton's old catalog said it's 1 1/16 x 24 .

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
Ours is 1-1/16 X 20. braol, that would be the way to go. Taps that size are not cheap anyway.

Re: Thread size tie-rod 'plug'?
I had one that was stuck so bad it wouldn't turn even after I got the tie rod end white hot. It twisted the tie rod beyond saving.
