Re: L100 Flathead Cam
Gas mileage is somewhat an oxymoron - but around town in low (4:11) around 9 mpg

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
Sounds like it's running too rich, This will kill power and wash the cylinderwalls with gas which doesn't help the rings. Install anAF meter and start tuning the engine.

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
A/F is A/F is A/F... Why should the combustion process care if it's fed by a huffer? Of course OlRon checks this while driving, about the only useful way. I'd be paying close attention to Ron.
We all know the 'undesirables' that happen when you get too far on either side of stoichiometric. Just my opinion... |

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
We run in the mid 15's, but you have to watch the ignition timing. Better mileage tho.

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
I'd never run a blown gas motor that lean (at least under load, which is where you need to be concerned). Truth be told, I'd not even run a full-race NA carbed motor that lean. At partial throttle, pulling vacuum . . . okay, but not under load.
One does have to think about the fact that a blown motor (without an intercooler) will pre-heat the intake charge, which will contribute to detonation (the death of a motor). If I'm tuning a blown motor under load (dyno), I like to see the AF about 12 to 12.5 to 1 (max). You have to really pay attention to ensure that you don't run too lean or put too much timing into it - or you'll detonate it . . . and then you can get your wheelbarrow out to pick up the pieces. Obviously boost levels come into play - at lower boost levels (say 4 - 6 lbs), you might be able to run a bit leaner (depending on the gas you're running, advance, etc). Even then, I'd tune to a figure no higher than 13 - 1. Me - I stay safe! B&S |

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
It's like an air-cooled engine their using a rich mixture to cool the engine combustion chamber.

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
!2 to 12.5 just like Dale wrote. 14.7 is fine if your driving a Prious ! But were talking about modified flathead's if milage is what your after than the modfications shown are really not going to get the best milage. However if we measure the smiles per mile with these modified flatheads than that number would be very high for sure.

But I'd thought you had asked for around town driving? Heck, at WOT in my OT EFI, I tuned for 12.5 :1 as well, but never messed with highway for economy. What hurts a blown engine at stoic putting around town or on the highway even? |

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
I wasn't considering a blown engine. With the right carb/ignition you can have an engine that preforms quite well at WOT and get pretty good mileage. Another consideration is longevity, at 12:1, I don't expect the rings last very long.

Re: L100 Flathead Cam
There is a 294 going together in CT. that I did the block work on. The engine will run a Magnason blower and an original Cam Techniques supercharger grind. !5 years ago I built a 296 for this fellow (Still in the truck) This has been tuned to get 20 mpg on the road, but 14, city traffic with a C4. The magnason should help with cruise mileage. As for test driving. I've spent the last 5 years trying to get better mileage from these flatheads. With Richards help, we've come along way. I always try something different, just to see if it works, and Richard has made his own rods for the Edelbrock carb. Yes we do test drive, aand me without a drivers license.
