Fuel Shutoff??

I have recently replaced the fuel shutoffs with new ones on both my A's as the old ones could no longer prevent gas from entering the fuel lines and
filling up the carb bowl again, I like to shut the fuel off and run car until fuel is burned off to help prevent gas fumes in the garage, so correct me if I'm wrong shouldn't these new reproduction shutoffs work in such way that when you shut the gas off from the tank no gas can escape into the fuel line and eventually works its way down to the carb??? I can see having maybe one of the two possibly being defective but both? I see in Snyders cat. that they guarantee not to leak!! maybe I should take my chances with theres???

If you have fine sediment particles that get caught in the valve they cut grooves that cause leaks. Even modern elastomer seal valves quickly succumb to fluids with particles.

Changing the valve may have disturbed and stirred up old sediment that quickly trashed the new valves. "Guaranteed not to leak" applies to clean fuel.

Did you use the cylinder style screen that goes into the tank end of the shut off valve?

Brattons sells a kit to install a stainless steel ball valve in the line between the shut off and the sediment bowl. That's what I use and haven't had the problem you describe since and it's been several years.

You would think so, but I have replaced two on O.P. cars because fuel sediment crud had hammered itself into the pin valve that the solenoid operates. I tried disassembly and cleaning them, but the elastomer (viton?) point was no longer perfect. I do have solenoid valves on both my late 31's but my fuel is fairly clean.

Yeah made sure to get that and also made sure no rust was laying in the bottom

Those that have installed the electric shut off, how did you wire it? I was hoping to have it come on with the ignition but it looks like that's not easy with Henry's wiring. Maybe use the tail light wiring... That might work. How did others do it?

I installed small toggle switches under the dash rails on both my late '31's. That allows me to shut off the fuel with the engine running and run the carb dry before parking overnight. Since I have easily accessible battery disconnects that I use religiously, leaving it on is never an issue.

That's probably what I'll do as well. I too like running the carb dry before putting the car away.

Just in case someone else reads this thread in the future, here's what I did. The valve came with the suggestion to use the parking lights to control the valve. That's fine except when you turn on the headlights, the parking lights (and thus the fuel) turn off! After thinking about it for a while, I realized the tail light is on whenever any of the lights are on. I pulled the headlight switch off and found an open spade connector on the tail light (black wire) section of the switch. I ran a black wire from there to the solenoid and now the fuel is on any time the light switch is on. Probably not a bad idea to drive with at least the parking lights on anyway. When putting the car away, I just turn the lights off and the carb runs dry,
