Floor Mats
The interior of my '37 Fordor appears to be original except that the previous owner installed a black carpet on the front floorboards. I don't care for this and have been thinking about replacing it with a floor mat from Carpenter's. I would like to hear from anyone who is using one of these and what their opinion of it is.
The main reason that I'm a bit hesitant is due to a previous bad experience. In July, 1999 , I bought a floor mat for my '34 roadster from Mac's. It came folded in a rectangular box. I put it out in the hot Texas sun which seemed to minimize the folds. This worked until it got colder and the folds reappeared. I removed the mat and reinstalled the old one. I hung the new mat over my engine lift but the folds never went away. Finally, some years later, when I picked the mat up, it fell apart at the folds. I have no idea who made this mat for Mac's but am hoping that the mats currently being sold by Carpenter's are a lot better. As a side note, Model A & T mats that I have bought from other providers have always come rolled up in tubular boxes. |

Re: Floor Mats
I bought a mat from Carpenters for my 40 a few years ago. No problems.
I put a hole in it for U-Joint lubing. |

Re: Floor Mats
The mat I purchased for my '46 Station Wagon fit fine. It sounds like your first purchase was old and the rubber turned brittle from being in the box too long.

Re: Floor Mats
No matter how new the mat, folding it introduces a lot of stress compared to rolling it up and shipping it (and storing it) in a tube.

Re: Floor Mats
Bought the mat from Carpenters for my 1939 PU and it worked out fine. Had it for 4 or 5 years now.

Re: Floor Mats
I bought my mat from Joe's Antiques (I recall it was in a Carpenter's packaging) and it fit well and has held up. I would add that, if there is a next time, I will NOT install the two button retainers on each side of the hump. They ended up puncturing through the mat in a couple weeks time. My car is a 37 Fordor.

Re: Floor Mats
Thanks to all of you. These are the answers that I had hoped for.
I still have the mat in my '34 roadster which I believe came in the car when it was new. This mat looks bad, discolored, torn and missing pieces. I think I'll splurge and get new mats for both cars. That should save some shipping charges. Thanks again for your help. Robert |
