Default cast numbers

picked up a flathead v-8,all I could find on the block is 81 in big numbers at the front of the block.any help on this.

Hi,it's a 1938 engine,3 1/16" bore....we have the same numbering system here as all our engines were cast in Canada....

Could also be 1939, 1940 and possibly 1941.
I have a canadian built 40 coupe with the original 81 numbered engine in it

Ford Canada had their own way of marking blocks. Ford US would use stamps until they started changing paint colors for different blocks like the 99A. I guess they felt that was good enough for ID purposes during manufacture.

And...there were 2 81 24 stud blocks, short crank 1938 only (same crank as the last 21 studs) and late '38---41 or so with the long crank and bigger bearings. Long crank was because of crank mounted fan.
