2 Tooth Steering Upper Bushing Installation Question (Late 30)
I am having trouble installing a new 2 tooth upper steering bushing on my late 30 Coupe. The steering column has the "V" shaped lug for the bushing to lock in place. The repo steering bushing only has a dowel pin to hold it in place.
I am struggling with the fit of the bushing. It appears to be too big in diameter to fit into the steering column. I've tried sanding down the bushing as I do not have a lathe to do the work plus the dowel pin is in the way as well. Also, the openings for the spark/throttle control rods are a bit tight for the rods to go trough smoothly and subsequently extend out the openings 3/4 down on the column. I've already destroyed 1 bushing trying to pound it into the column so something is not correct. Are there any suggestions from others with this type of set-up on modifications to the upper steering bushing or luck from another vendor on a better fit bushing? I believe that the bushing should be sunken enough in the steering column to allow the control rods to drag on the notches etched into the base of the steering column but I am not reaching that point. Thanks, Brian |

It's a tight fit, take a screwdriver or a chisel and use it as a wedge to widen the slot where the locking bolt goes through to tighten around the bushing.
Tap it in with a hammer, about half way in it gets easier.

Keith - not sure what you are suggesting as there is no bolt that holds the upper steering bushing in place on my column. This bushing is located right under the steering wheel. I've attached a picture of the bushing in question.

Re: 2 Tooth Steering Upper Bushing Installation Question (Late 30)
burner31 was thinking the upper bushing at the steering box. As you eluded to, the spark and throttle rods are not going to be on the quadrant notches. I drilled the smaller holes larger about halfway down into the bushing to allow the rods to seat lower. I have ground the outer diameter down to get it to fit. It isn't pretty, but cant be seen anyway.

I believe that Snyders now have a bushing that solves that problem. Check their part number A-3517-X

Yep, my mistake, thought you were talking about the upper steering box bushing.
Oops

There was a long discussion on another Ford website about this same problem. I forget the resolution. PM me.
