Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
I finally found some time to work on getting my 29 Tudor back up and running after a 2 yearn hibernation. So I had most of the parts to rebuild my model B transmission with 42-48 v8 gears, new bearings and thrust washers, and seals. First was to get the used v8 gears in useable condition. So I got some media from harbor freight and mixed in some pinesol and let it do some magic. I think the turned out good. I only had to rob parts from 3 transmission to get a good set of gears.
Then I blasted the case and got it painted as well as rebuild my double detent shifter with new stiffer springs and new balls. I had teo also modify the shifter because it would hit my leg when driving. Last edited by 12secvx; 10-03-2018 at 09:58 PM. |

Re: Getting the model B transmission transmission to swap into my 29 Tudor
I bought a Model B adapter kit from Bert’s. Installed new clutch cross shaft bushings, Got the gears installed as well.
I had to heat and bend the pedal mounts to set flush on the case and the brake pedal came in contact with the pedal bracket as well and needed reworked. |

I need the make a parking brake bracket because this kit from Bert’s didn’t come with one as well as rebuild parking brake with a new paw and plate.
I happened to find a NOS hose for the grease cup for the throw out bearing so it works wonderfully now. |

Got my new bushings in the pedals and got them installed also tried to figure out how I was going to mount my stop lamp switch today.
And made a brake pedal return spring to keep my brake lights front sticking on. |

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
Basically a stock model B transmission is still a 3 speed but has helical cut and synchronized gears for 2nd and 3rd gears which cuts down noise and the need to double clutch between shifting. You can also fit 42-48 v8 gears in a model B case like I did with a little modification to the first gear synchro ring. This set of gears which gives you a more modern synchronized hub with springs and balls that helps keep it in gear. This gear set also has helical cut first gear which cuts down on noise and vibration. I used a double detent 39-48 pickup shift tower with upgrades springs and detent balls from “Hot rod John” to keep it in gear as well as greatly improved shifting. I hope I explained it well enough. Thanks for your detailed reply. I was aware that some people put a '39 transmission in their Model A's to take advantage of the synchromesh gears but I was not aware that the B trans could be used as well. There is a guy here in Southern California that sells refurbished '39 transmissions and I believe he also sells an adaptor. He was in Orange County but moved to Hemet a couple of years ago. Ya it basically the same effort to swap either a complete 39 up transmission or a Model B transmission with swapped gears really no benefits to one over the other honestly.

Great job. What about the wishbone?

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
Bert’s or whoever makes them for him has a nice kit they sell that comes with the clutch cross shaft. Mount for the pedals. And lower mount that attaches the stock A wishbone with the original ball socket mount.
This is the kit I used it is about $240 shipped off evilbay sold by Bert’s on there. It fit well the only think I had to do is heat up the pedal mount to fit flush against the shift tower so it wouldn’t put stress on the bell housing and crack it when it was completely tightened down. I did have to make my own parking brake mount out of some 90 degree angle and some studs welded on it. |

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
Do you have a Model B engine to go with it? The flywheel cover for the A engine is far different from the B. The B cover is only the top half, the bottom half is part of the B oil pan. The B pan cannot be used on the A engine without serious modification.
I also found that the B flywheel cover, which includes the engine mounts as on the A, is narrower than the A and special mounts would be necessary. Does the Bert's kit address these problems? |

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
Thanks The heads up. I do have a B flywheel cover as well as a B oil pan. My plan is to modify the A oil pan and by cutting off the lower flywheel cover and welding it to a A pan. As far as mounts I’m planning on using the A float a motor on the gram and just using 90 degree angle on the flywheel housing similar to the ones this guy used in picture.

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
I got the lower flywheel cover off the B pan today and made a couple filler panels so it fits the rear of the A oil pan. I have not welded it on the A pan yet because I kinda wondering what is the actual point. I like the idea of having it removable so I can tighten the rear A oil pan bolts easily with it off. I don’t think it has any actual structural support for the transmission as the original A was attached to the same bolts as the upper flywheel housing will be. All it is really doing is covering my flywheel and the supporting the lower part of the transmission to the wishbone mount. Which it uses 3 of the belthousing bolts to hold it on.
I’m thinking I might just cut a slit in some vacuum hose to push onto the leading edge where it meets the oil pan to keep the housing clean form dirt and it from rattling on the pan. What are you guys thoughts? I’m curious |

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
Hi,
I am going through the same thing now. A engine to B trans for a little period roadster hot rod build. I wasn't planning on welding the two pans together for the same reason. I need to trim mine a bit to fit the A pan a little closer in the corners but didn't see the advantage to welding them. I like your mounts. I tried using the stock mounts, and elongating the holes in them to line up with the two holes in the B flywheel cover and then making a spacer to take up the difference side to side but I like your idea better. i have some 5 or 6" angle iron i could cut up to do this. I think that's the path I will take. Are you going to secure the rear of the trans using a yolk similar to the one that comes with a Float a Motor kit? Thanks, Scott |

Re: Getting the model B transmission together to swap into my 29 Tudor
I rebuilt the transmission in my 1932 with gears that I had picked up at Hershey. Then I tried to put the 1932 tower on top of the gear case and found that the forks would not fit over the grooves on the gears. I was told that the later gears were made with larger diameter grooves and you have to grind the shifting forks a little wider. Just be aware, may not be a problem for you. Nice looking work. Ed

location....it SHOULD pop-out of gear. I know a fella that did it. Measure the transmission lids and you'l see the difference.. |

D.J. is correct. My B trans with Lincoln gears uses a '39 top with the (so called) 3" shift fork. It has the correct spacing and offset.

never mind DJ and others covered this ... Paul Garrigan told me years ago that grinding forks will not work.
