Default Rusty radiator water

When the water outlet blew the rusty water went everywhere. Car wash in a high pressure sprayer did little to remove it. What will take the rust stain off without harming the paint?

Meguiars makes a water spot remover. I would start with something not real abrasive. Compounding would be my last resort.

I used Simple Green and a soft brush to get the rusty water mess off of mine.

Vinegar removes rust stains fairly well.

WD-40 works well for removing lots of junk without hurting paint. Scrub with a soft brush.

I had to use very fine rubbing compound to remove the rust stains on my '29. Paint is modern base coat/clear coat. I tried Simple Green and then a clay bar which helped but didn't do the job completely.

Here's a thread worth reading that shows how I cleaned a real mess. Pictures in replies 2 and 17 show the before and after of using WD-40.

I am just a new guy at this (only since 1962) but maybe this is another reason to use antifreeze and NOT water in the engine block and radiator!!!

I'll never understand why some insist on using only water.

After the mess the vinegar treatment caused me, I'd use Evaporust rust the next time.

Me either Tom,

I know a guy who had two cars with newly rebuilt engines.

He died and the widow sold them to someone as having newly rebuilt engines that the seller verified with the re-builder.

The cars were both loaded on the same truck and off they went.

The truck was delayed on a high mountain pass for several days and both engines arrived with cracked heads and blocks (out side in several places and in the valve chamber).

The widow felt responsible even though she did not know about there being no antifreeze and had to take the loss on both engines.

All for the cost of 3 gallons of anti-freeze!! Mixed 50 - 50 for 6 gallons for both cars.

Makes sense to me!!

Same Song - Different verse:

I bought my pickup from a guy in San Diego. He had only owned it for a couple of weeks and his only goal was to flip it. Even after I insisted on the coolant being drained and anti-freeze be installed (not a rocket-science job), and my offer to pay for it to be done, it wasn't. It was February, and it was being shipped to Alaska. Of course, delay in shipment in route due to a storm resulted in a cracked head. No recourse to the seller without physically going down south, so I had to eat that part of the deal.

Oh, it wasn't plain water in it, it had water wetter in it.

Go to the grocery store or w\Walmart and buy some Iron-Out. Use some on a rag, it will disappear rust and won't hurt the paint as long as you wash it off with soap and water. Also, if you get some rust pits coming through chrome, takes it right off.

S100 Total Cycle Cleaner - Have yet to find anything this won't remove and is gentle on your paint. Available online or most motorcycle shops.
