Default 29 Repro gas cap question

The original gas cap on the 29 Tudor that I am restoring would not tighten down. The threads looked okay but when I tried to tighten it down it just kept turning. So I bought a repro from Brattons and when I went to put it on the gas tank I seemed to have a tough time of it. Those fine threads are a pain (I guess that is why Ford changed it on to 30-31 cars)

Anyway, I got it to fit (I thought) and I went forward with other things that needed to be done.

Yesterday I was putting some gas in the tank (which is now installed) and when I went to put the cap on I was again having some trouble threading it onto the neck. Finally I took some Vaseline and coated the cap and neck threads. That got it to work okay but it felt like the cap was not tightening down on the cap gasket. So I played around with it and I discovered that the new cap seemed to be a little different than the old cap (and I don't know if the old cap was original or not). The new cap seems to have a greater distance between the gasket and the neck of the cap--see pictures

I ended up making another gasket to put into the cap--that seemed to solve the problem but I worry about the second gasket falling out of the cap some day!

Anyone else have this problem with repro caps?
