U-Joint restoration (New design)
Has anyone taken apart the "New Design" U-joint on page 545 of the Service Bulletins for restoration?
If so, what did you use to dissasemble the U-joint or did you? Thanks. Pluck |

Re: U-Joint restoration (New design)
I've done quite a few. The original rebuild kits supplied by Ford came without instructions, but the Service Bulletins had instructions for dismantling. Subsequent NORS kits from Spicer and others sometimes provided limited instructions. Here's mine:
1. Mark the u-joint halves for position relative to each other so that they can be reassembled in the same orientation. This important to maintain balance and prevent vibration. 2. Release the spring tension of the circlips by striking them soundly with a chisel and hammer in the middle of their respective radii. 3. Remove the circlips with a needle-nose pliers. 4. Remove parts and replace with new bushings and cross section, then carefully squeeze on new circlip retainers. I say carefully because if one circlip springs back off the cross section it will take flight to parts unknown and then you have a problem as there are only 4 per kit. |

Page 564 of the Service Bulletins shows how to rebuild them and make the tools.
