Thumbs up 550x19 tyres were factory fitted

Came across in interesting fact while looking into 550x19 bias ply tyres. They were factory fitted at some point during GAZ A production (1932-1936).

This A has NOS or perhaps new stock tyres (the tyre factory that made the GAZ A tyres still exists today).

Early production GAZ As were fitted with 475-19 with a design by the Seiberling Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio.

Maybe GAZ wasn't so profit focused as Ford was in the west and so fitted the larger (and better) tyres than they did here. MANY Model A owners here run 5.25X21 tyres on their 28/9 cars. They are so much better that I don't think anybody would go back to the 4.40/4.50X21 tyres. they hold the road soooo much better. I use them on the back and they give an extra 5% roads speed for the same revs.
I think Henry didn't want to spend the extra. Every $ not spent was another $ in his pocket. That said, the speeds at which these cars were driven then were much lower than we do these days.

The 4.40/4.50X21 choice was about saving $. Nothing new as Henry put 30x3 front tyres (24" rims) on USA made Model Ts, while rear were the wider 30x3.5 (23" rims), to save a couple of cents. Canadian made Ts, which were sold in Australia, received the wider tyre size both front and rear.

Looking at these pics I think the 550x19 bias ply look good on an A; gives the car a more solid look.

According to the owners manual, the Station Wagon should have had 550’s.

So you've got a car with no brakes, no power, stiff steering and aerodynamics like a brick dunny and you want to put power/braking/steering sapping wide tyres on it that will connect with every horseshoe nail in the vicinity.

Interesting. Makes sense because 550s have a higher load rating. Wonder what the judging standards say about Wagon tyre size?
