Gas gauge schematic
I know I saw it somewhere, but can't seem to put my finger on it. Is there a blow-up view of the gas gauge assembly? I am going to remove the gauge and replace the float and reassemble with new gaskets. I just want to see the correct order of things.

Re: Gas gauge schematic
I had no problems doing this little job. I think I did look at one of the catalogs to be sure I knew the correct order of things as I put it back together, but it was really simple to figure out as I recall. I don't think you'll have any problems with it.
You can do it with gas in the tank, just low enough that the level is well below the hole in the tank. It's also more pleasant to do in a well ventilated location so you don't smell so many gas fumes. |

Re: Gas gauge schematic
Be sure to use the cork gaskets for the gauge lens.

Re: Gas gauge schematic
What do most of you use, the cork or the (is it?) neoprene float?

Re: Gas gauge schematic
The cork float is sealed with shellac, which dissolves in the ethanol gas. The cork will absorb the gas and then sink. Neoprene is best.

Some do modify a tilly carb float, if I remember correctly, and use it as a gauge float. Found this, http://www.snjparts.com/Model-A-Fuel...a-9313-br.html

Re: Gas gauge schematic
Interesting about the modified carb float for a gauge float. I guess that would virtually never sink.
When I had to do this little job to correct a tiny leak occurring (I guess) at the gasket between the gauge housing and the tank, I didn't change my cork float to a neoprene one as the cork looked good and floated just fine. I'd heard the ethanol gas was hard on them but there's a local station nearby that sells ethanol free gas and I fill up there. I'm supposing that on the infrequent occasions I'm on the road and do have to use some of the so called "up to 10% ethanol" gas (I think is what I've read at the pump) it shouldn't bother it too much, should it? Does adding a stabilizer to the fuel, which I also do to add lubricity and hopefully minimize tank rust, etc., help? |

Re: Gas gauge schematic
I put a cork float in my gauge about 20 years ago. It still works fine even though I've had some tanks of crap gas in it. Any more replacements will be the new material though, just to be safe against a sinking float.

I remember Chief popping out the gauge assembly, let it lay in the sun all day, then I would give the cork 2 coats of Shellac, by dipping it. I don't remember how long it lasted??? Or, if he had the special tool to remove it. He worked part time for Bill Ogan, our Ford Dealer, so "maybe" he had bought the tool.?? Chief also worked part time for Buddy Boggs, the Counties' largest UN-AUTHORIZED Ford Place! We were lucky to be able to pick up on a LOTS of Ford info. Bill W.

Re: Gas gauge schematic
I believe you. I knew a gent about 55 yoa who swallowed two aspirin (the big one, not the 81 mg your doctor prescribed) every day until he had a stroke or maybe a heart attack. Great guy, and we couldn't convince him to stop. we buried him in his mid-fifties.

Re: Gas gauge schematic
Installed new float today. There was a cork one that bit the the bullet. The main gasket was also rubber and I replaced with a cork one. The brass slip ring was missing, but one came with the kit. Great to have a working gauge again. Was way easier than I thought it would be. As usual, thanks everyone for the advice.

Re: Gas gauge schematic
I've had to remove the pin and arm, then slip the assembly over a 1 x 4 clamped in the vice. Then I could put all my weight down on the tool as I turned it to unscrew the inner nut. It also helps to let the glass and nut soak for a day with Kroil.
