Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Probably a simple question, but I'm now an 8BA guy so my knowledge of the early stuff is fading into the mists of the past.
My question is : Is there a gasket between the coil and the body of a "Helmet" distributor? If so, does anyone know about how thick it is? |

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Just to add ,You might want regulate the thickness of that gasket depending the spring tension to points contact required ,or if your running a adapter or not ,

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Guys, I don't need any. I just want to know the thickness so I can get the dimensions on my new '33-'36 condenser right. I have a body and a coil, but no gasket, and the way these things are put together, the gasket makes a difference on the way the ground strap fits. No matter what anybody else does, it seems nobody can make a decent condenser for these things. We want to offer them in two values, one for stock coils, and one for modern (Skip's) coils. I want to get them right the first time to keep the good reputation I think I have already earned with my "Trash Cans".

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Denny,
I'm guessing the goose neck bend in the strap was to accommodate various thickness's...Why not let me send you some in various thicknesses and material. Charlie ny |

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Denny,
A simple suggestion.... On my cars I trim the condenser bracket into a “u” shape rather than a hole, so that I can remove the coil without having to completely remove the distributor bolt. It’s a real time saver as in some cars like a 1937-9 that bolt can be a pain to reach and easy to drop. and also helps allow for varying gasket thicknesses. The 81a condenser for 37-41’s grounds through the coil screw rather than the typical 78 type that grounds through the mounting bolt. I think I sent you a version of both as well as a 32/36 |

[QUOTE=tubman;1920961]
We want to offer them in two values, one for stock coils, and one for modern (Skip's) coils. I was under the impression that a Skip coil would use the same original condenser with the .36 mfd. If not, how would you know what to use? Good to hear that tubman is still working on this project. |

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
I use stock condensers that are tested and known to be good with Skip's rewound coils. They work well....and last a good long time.

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Does 6V vs 12V make a difference in the condenser needed?

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Could someone tell me how you go about testing a condenser as I have several and have no idea if they are good or not ?

for testing condensers. Almost all of them test good cold but need to be heated to over 200 degrees, hot is when they breakdown. G.M.

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Plain old Napa condensers work fine with Skip's coils. Many miles with zero problems.

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
There certainly are condensers out there that work .... But.... When Tubman comes out with his 32-36 Ford condensers you can sure bet I'll buy a few.
I build early distributors literally daily and test condensers daily. As GM said you have t treat them like they are on the car with heat to test them properly. Simply measuring the capacitance is not enough. The leak down rate is important as well. |

We are still working on this project, but are close to being done. Right now, we are optimizing our manufacturing process so the cost can come in at a reasonable level. I'll be sending you some pre-production prototypes soon. Denny |

Re: Question about a "Helmet" distributor
Put me down for 2 for a 35-36 when they are done. No rush!
