Default Crime Does Not Pay.

Two friends of mine did an oil change on a Model A . The used oil was put in an empty laundry washing detergent container . They went off to Napa to buy new oil and recycle the old . On the way to Napa they stopped at the supermarket en route. On their return to the pickup they saw the "detergent" had been stolen out of the bed !!!

John back in sunny chill wind Suffolk County England, just back from two months in Chandler AZ did Turlock and San Diego as well ,a grand time indeed .

On top of oil in the clothes, I would image getting oil out of the washing machine would be fun - not.

Good one John! Thanks for sharing.

I always put the used oil back in the quart oil bottles and when I have a case I go to the recycle center. Sure enough, like you, I stopped at the market once and somebody 'stole' my case of used motor oil.

Hey John,
Hmm, let's hope that 'they' ended up noticing that was used oil , and could/did use it in their vehicle.

When as a youth, used oil was only oil I ever used...just kept adding to what was left in crankcase. Hey, worked for poor boys then.
You may (maybe not) be surprised that people did such 'frugal' things then.

Never put 'new' oil, out of a container in any old clunker i owned.

Whatever the outcome, it’s too good for the slime buckets! Hopefully next time it’s a urine sample in a whiskey bottle !

Gives you a whole new outlook on detergent oil.

John,

Did the San Diego Swap Meet on Saturday remind you of England? I was in the middle of the Qualcomm parking lot without an umbrella when the rain hit. Had to run home to dry my cloths.

Reminds me of the story about the guy, tired of repeated thefts, that left a briefcase with a hornet nest in it in his car.

There was a company called "Reclaimo" that sold what they called re-refined oil for 25 cents a quart. It was my understanding that they heated it and put it through some kind of clay filter, it looked clean but had an odd smell to it.

I am assuming this would be like non-detergent oil? Or did they put in additives after cleaning?

I'm too old and fat to get down and crawl under a car to drain the oil (getting down is no problem - it's getting back up that's a bitch ). Anyway, when I was changing my own oil, I saved a variety of empty gallon jugs for the old oil - antifreeze, windshield washer, whatever. Never used a detergent jug though and never had one stolen.

There was a cut-rate gas station in the town where I went to college (many decades ago ). They sold recycled oil for 25c a quart - they kept it in these by the pumps:

I am reminded of parking my pickup truck in the company lot in the center of Cambridge, MA. Lot unmonitored - although the company DID charge employees to park there. (explanation being EVERY square foot of city land has to be "accountable" for tax reasons.)

It was winter. The truck was loaded down with a healthy load of firewood - for traction in the snow.

I came out of work and all that wood was GONE.

Unappreciated by the thieves apparently was it was GREEN WOOD, selected for its pure attraction to the ground. And unable to be burned for at least another year.

And those dudes must have worked AWFULLY hard for that wood as the lot was closed and you don't drive another vehicle up close.

City slickers I guess...

To paraphrase an old saying, stealing your wood warms you twice!
