There is a tool for spreading the spring leaves after the clips are off. It is like a c clamp but has tapered ends to go between the leaves. A very common tool in the day but I don't think they are being reproduced. I have one that I found in an old garage. If you find one at a yard sale or old tool shop, they probably won't know what it is for. Good luck!
