Default engine ticking sound

Found source of ticking. Engine was running fine before and after accident. Dropped pan to inspect and found this. Installing new cam gear. I am sure it was close to complete failure

Great job! Sharing what you find and what you did to repair is so much help to help diagnose are own problems with our cars

When I first heard the ticking noise I thought it might be a tappet but the sound was very faint. Put a stethoscope on running engine and found noise was to the front of the engine. Since I had pulled the engine to do the accident repair decided to pull the pan to check out the engine inside as it had not been touched in over 25 years. Amazed as to how clean it was but the teeth missing from the timing gear was very obvious and explained the light ticking I would occasionally hear

I see this failure often noted on this Forum and others. I also see people using aluminum and bronze timing gears to "solve" this problem. Can anyone explain why these teeth fail? Is it a poor machining job to start with (incorrect center distance)? Is it substandard phenolic material in the timing gear? Is it due to a loose timing gear nut? Is it due to over-revving the engine? Do people replace multiple timing gears and never find the solution?

Methinks that the problem is the binding agent in the composition gears fails.

I could give you my opinion but could not say all is fact. As for the fiber gear the big benefit is it is quiet. The aluminum gear has a whine to it. The bronze gear is a little quieter but cost is high. The fiber gear comes in two flavors a compressed fiber and a laminated fiber. From my research the pressed fiber is more prone to failure and I went to the laminated. There is also a fiber gear outer mated to a steel center which has a history of gear part getting loose on the steel center. I am not positive but the timing gear currently on appears to be the compressed fiber gear.

I replaced the fiber gear in my A's engine w/an aluminum one and don't notice any whine when it's running.

I think it would be the degree of correct gear meshing to whine noise. Just like ring and pinion compatibility.

I would think you have a point as to how the two gears mate up and the amount of tooth contact
