Quick question
Nothing really similar in search but I adjusted my pressure plate prior to installing my engine. Seemed like I had to turn in the adjustment screws a bunch. After installation, I've got a slipping clutch that I didn't have before the engine etc. was removed. Clutch disk is almost new and pressure plate is in good shape also. My question is: Could my adjustment be causing the clutch to slip? I have about 1.5" of clutch play before it engages and about 1/4" between the throwout bearing and the forks.

Did you have the disc and PP bolted to the flywheel when you adjusted the 6 fingers?
Did you adjust them to 5/8" to 11/16"? |

Yes to both. I was just wondering if I goofed on the measurements (too far in) , it would be like riding the clutch making it slip. Pete |

Can you remove the hand hole cover and take a picture of the bearing and 6 fingers? I can't imagine what is wrong to allow slipage, unless the disc is in backwards, but I doubt you did that. |

The clutch pedal should only have about 1/2" free play at the top. 1 1/2" of free play is too much., Try adjusting your clutch pedal to 1/2" of free play at the top. Good luck!

Sorry to confuse, by "forks" I meant the 6 fingers on the clutch plate are quite a ways down. |

The clutch fingers should be less than 1/8" from the face of the throwout bearing. I used a 6" piece of bailing wire, about .100 thick, as a feeler gauge to adjust mine. Tie a string to it because you Will drop it. This can be done in the car. Put in "adjust clutch fingers" in the Search window and lots of threads will come up.

That baling wire sounds like a great idea! Better than dangeling a feeler guage in there. I'm to take it that fingers in too far WILL make the clutch slip a little ??

Someone brazed a feeler guage to an old screwdriver for this purpose.

I used a peice of electrical coduit and flattened one end,drilled a hole and bolted the feeler gauge blade in it. works great just un bolt your feeler gauges and remove the blade you need and bolt it in.

What did you set the height at ? I don't believe you mentioned that. As Tom said, 5/8- 11/16" is fine. I use a piece of 5/8" round stock for this job. You may try reducing the amount of free-play and see if that helps. But, 1.5" of free-play is OK and the clutch should work fine. I think re-setting the fingers to a specific height while still in the car is a heck of job. Re-setting them for even contact is a different story.

Free play is totally irrelevant as far as slippage is concerned. During free play the release bearing is not touching the plate and it is in as full lockup as possible. The adjustment bolts are too tight which, prevents the plate from clamping the disk fully. Tom is correct with the 5/8" adjustment from the top of the plate to the fingers.

James is correct, I just didn't want to step on anyones toes. Personally I think the flywheel/clutch needs to come out and set on the bench.

I adjusted the forks and found about 1/16-1/32" end play probably at the bearing (which is funny since it doesn't leak a drop) when I pressed the clutch. That may be where my adjustment went. Anyhoo...............it still slips.
