Default 1935 - 1936 Pickup Taillight Brackets

I am again seeking guidance on the restoration of my ‘36 pickup. I am working on the bed and sorting out a plan to reassemble the bed using rivets and have a question on taillight brackets. I have done a lot of digging on this forum as well as online and have found that most people say the flat type of bracket mounted to the front side of the rear stake pockets is correct. My question is... why do my original, untouched stake pockets with factory rivets still installed have no holes for any type of bracket? Original rivets are still installed, no holes have been welded up. What am I missing? A friend has a ‘36 pickup as well and has holes on drivers side for bracket but nothing on passenger side. Was one taillight standard with the passenger side being an option on the pickups? Thanks for the help.

One tail light was all that was required. Ford also pulled parts out of their bin as needed, I have found 34 strike plates used on doors, cast iron tail lamp brackets that fastened under the bed, again left over stuff. Ford used several vendors to supply parts, so bodies can even vary. The latter pickups used the bolts from the tailgate hinge to mount the bracket on.

No expert but Im sure with mine they screwed in left and right hand side, I cant recall me threading anything. I went downstairs and took this quick pic and had a check both screwed in.. [Ok the top left has a bolt but thats because it became loose ]

Here's where Don Rogers comes in. My bed is a reproduction so I can't tell if they are correct. Don can, or possibly Michael Driskill could help, he bought a couple of Jerry Grayson's original pickup beds. U just can't say for certain.

Thanks guys. Iíve attached a picture Don shared in a thread a long time ago. It certainly looks correct. The mystery is why do my original stake pockets not have these mounts? Iím not sure if my bed is from a Ď35 or a Ď36, so perhaps this plays a factor. Thanks

Here you go -- original 1936 Ford 1/2 ton pickup
And yes, the gas cap is not correct.
What I did on my reproduction box is get some rivets and then welded the ends inside the corner bracket. You can get to the rivet from the bottom of the bracket.

Hey, OldGold360--- you have my picture. And I have sent it to Don.

Here are those two pictures in a larger easier to see format.
Hope that it helps.

As I look at the second picture, I would think that the taillights were moved to the other side of the rear box corner bracket for the reason to clear the added rear bumper/trailer hitch bar. If the taillights were mounted as in the first picture, the added rear bumper/trailer hitch would be in the way of having the license plate visible.

Our '36 has the cast brackets that are bolted to the underside of the bed side pocket area as I recall. Mac Hils bed on this one so not original.

Our original '36 had the taillamp bracket riveted to the front of the stake pocket like the photo. That is the way I would do it.

I would bolt a license plate onto the lic. plate bracket and check for clearance, of the plate to the bottom side of the bed, before I drilled any holes.

With a rear bumper the license plate is mostly covered up anyway. Police have never stopped me or questioned it.

I have two different types of taillight brackets. My stake pockets show no sign of the style in the second picture ever being attached. Where does the other cast style mount under the bed?

The tail light is mounted like this on my 36 pickup, it was riveted in place, its a old work truck that has survived

The brackets on the left were generally used on 1929-1934 pickup beds. It is quite conceivable that there was some carryover into early 1935 but that would take careful (Don Rodgers???) reading of engineering changes and directions to assembly plants. The bracket on the right is what is usually found on 1935-36 pickup beds without bumpers. 1936-37 with bumpers usually had a bracket similar to the one on the right with an offset between the bed and taillight.

Did the 35-36 pickups ever come standard with just a drivers side taillight?

Yes..........the driver's side was the only tail light except for (I believe) Minnesota and Washington that required 2 taillights.

Karl, Early 35 chassis parts lists(Jan 1, 1935) list 46-13470-B as the rear tail lamp bracket for a 35 pickup. By May 1935 they were listing 50-13470 as the bracket.

As a followup, Here is a photo of a very early 35 pickup bracket part # 46-13470-B also used on 1934 station wagon. Photo courtesy of Dave Rehor.
