Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
Just like to know if a 1931 Standard Coupe would have pin striping from the factory.
Judging standard said yes. But I have an original car what had a paint job in the forties but there is no evidence that there was a pinstripe on it. |

Re: Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
My personal opinion is they were all "supposed" to have them Joop, and although it is indeed possible one slipped out the door without it, I would think that it would be highly unlikely. Regarding your car, ...my thoughts are "why" did it get a paint job in the 1940's? The simple answer is probably 'Because it needed one'. The reason it needed one is usually from being washed and/or polished so much that the paint wore through. The pinstripe would have been easy to polish off too, especially if an abrasive cleaner or polish was used with any frequency, --which did happen often.

Thanks Brent.
The deck lid and panel behind spare tire are still the original Lombard Blue but badly faded. I do agree with you but like to hear from people with a Coupe in same condition as mine |

Re: Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
Joop, The original stripe was done in lacquer so the film thickness was much less than what you will find with most of today's stripes done in enamel. As Brent suggested, the original stripe polishes away over the years. The example above is Doug Clayton's unmolested 155-D with 24k original miles. This is an EXTREMELY nice car and still has some of the strip polished off. These two pics help illustrate how nice the car is. Now here is a sad one! This is my 28k mile Fordor. The previous owner had the exterior "detailed" just before I purchased it in 1995. The result was the removal of almost the entire stripe. This it the BEST section remaining on the exterior!

Re: Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
Here are a few close up photos of different areas of the pinstripe on our unrestored '29 Fordor. You can see how different the ends were done, possibly by different stripers as the photos are of both side of hte car. You can also see how the stripe was partially wiped off of the hood, probably from years of cleaning.

Re: Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
Joop,
My 1931 Standard Coupe was originally Thorne Brown with a straw stripe on the exterior. I measured the original stripe and it was 3/32 wide.

Re: Pinstripe on 1931 Standard Coupe
There is a man named Jim Brand, from Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y. that would know everything about the pin stripes on this or any other car. He's great-like a walking Model A book-full of info. and a great guy!!
He did the pin stripping at the national show this year in Indiana. |
