Default stromberg 97

I read that the new stromberg 97 has the vacuum port on the base and will work with the 1949/53 LoadaMatic distributors , any advantage to the stromberg over the 94 type carb ? I have A 53 f-100 with A 51 mercury flathead in it , single 94 on it ,

I don't know much about them, but if the vacuum port is on the base, it's nor what you want, The Load-a-matic needs a port in the middle of the carburetor body to supply "venturi vacuum". Unless what you read specifically mentioned "Load-a-matic" or "venturi vacuum", it probably won't work. I do believe that back in the day,Stromberg itself did produce such carburetors. Mercury's came from the factory with larger carburetors than Fords did for a reason.

The 94 is not a less good carburetor then the stromberg....a vacuum(load) sensitive carburetor gives you good fuel economy tuned right.
If you want to spend the money somewhere it will give you a return on investment buy a modern distributor...

See the second topic "What about my Ford Flathead?" It is pretty plain that unless you have the "rare" Stromburg 1-1, their ported vacuum will not work with load-o-matic. It is specific that the new Stromberg VP isn't compatible with load-o-matic. https://www.stromberg-97.com/faqs/st...acuum-advance/

This is not correct information. From the Stromberg site:

On a Ford flathead engine, the early front-mounted distributors (up to 1948) used a vacuum brake (retard) system, driven by intake manifold vacuum, so these engines do not need carburetor vacuum. From 1949 to ’53, however, the Ford V8 used the weird and wonderful Load-O-Matic distributor which took vacuum from the Ford 8BA/EAB carburetor. This wasn’t simple ported vacuum, though. It was taken from three sources – manifold, ported and venturi vacuum, so you can only use the Load-O-Matic with the correct compatible Ford/Holley carburetor OR the rare Stromberg 97 1-1 model which was produced as an aftermarket swap specially for post ’49 Fords. Yes, it does have a vacuum port in the base, and yes it does work with the Load-O-Matic. But no, it doesn’t provide what we know as ported vacuum for your regular distributor. Equally, the new Stromberg 97 VP option will not work properly with the Load-OMatic. As far as we know, all of the currently available aftermarket distributors for Ford flatheads are all-mechanical advance.

I've never seen a Stromberg with a vacuum base, interesting. Strombergs made their way out in 38 by ford. With the chandler then holley. Stromberg still maybe, make the best "hotrod" carb.

You can convert the loadamatic dizzy over to a mechanical advance setup. Or use a holley. Which works well.

I would be extremely interested on how this is done; it would solve a lot of problems for me. Can you provide the details?

Here's a NOS version of the rare/elusive Stromberg 97 1-1. The box is a bit tattered, but all the goodies are there. Note this is a Stromberg (Bendix) part number 380272 intended for 49-53 Ford cars with manual transmissions. Even comes with a short length of 1/8 copper tube and compression nut.

The vacuum source on the carburetor shown is not located anywhere near where it is on a 94. They must have done some "creative" work to get the proper vacuum signal waaaaay down there.

It seems that you have the instructions with the carburetor. What do they say? Not doubting you, but it looks really different.

I'll try to get a better/closeup photo of the instructions tomorrow. It would be interesting to see the internal differences between this carb and a "normal" 97.

Hope these photos can be read. Essentially the instruction sheet states "attach vacuum spark line (7)". Number 7 is the port on the carb. The instructions also have statements specifically calling out 1949-51 models versus 1952 models. No details beyond this.

In the FWIW category, Carter also sold a replacement for both the 97 and the 94. Here's a NOS version of it. Instruction sheet states for 1934-1955 Ford V8. It also mentions "vacuum spark line".
