DL,
Yep the '39 was 6 spline...however I seem to remember in mid '37 Ford went
from the hollow drive shaft to the 6 spline solid drive shaft with the center support
bearing.

Charlie that hollow drive shaft took the 10 spline pinion.Seen even 10 spline used in early 38 commercial applications.

There was also some very limited use of solid DS, center bearing, six spline pinion in late '36.

I've seen ten spline in near all the mechanical brake models. late 38 or 39 seems to be the start of the 6-spline stuff. There is a difference in the spider gear and axle tooth counts for the earlier 10-spline types too. Mercury cars just had a solid one piece driveshaft & pinion.

A lot of the 6 spline DS,s Ive seen had worn out splines on the rear end & coupling Most of the earlier 10 spline ones had good splines. When I made up a DS for a Columbia to model A conversion I used the front section of 2 46-48 DS,s as the rear splines were worn out on both of them.I welded them together & drilled one end for the coupling pin.Its been fine for the last 13,000 miles.

The '38 was the last of the 18 tooth axle/spider. !939 began the 16 tooth. As with many changeovers, there was likely some overlap, as they were interchangeable (as sets).
