Default Model A - Light Switch Rod

G'day fellas

I am new to this site and just wanted to ask a quick question about light switch rods for Model A's

I am just in the process of sorting out some electrical on my '29 Model A Pick Up - Whenever I turn my steering wheel, the headlights would switch on/off.

I have just purchased a new light switch rod and the bushing that is installed with the rod. After installation of the new rod, the light switch rod still seems to want to turn and switch the headlights on/off.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Question Re: Model A - Light Switch Rod

Having the exact same problem with my 28 tudor. Pulled the new rod, tightend steering wheel nut, reinstalled; light switch turns with the steering wheel.

I just experienced the same problem with my '29. I had to slightly sand the rod and the lower square edges to enable the rod to slide down into the column. I also had to clean the upper threaded area of the column as it was slightly mushroomed by a previous owner probably when trying to remove the steering wheel. I used a small fine round file to clean up the inside edge which then allowed the horn rod to slip right into the column and not move with the steering wheel. Be careful, that area of the column is thin and can easily break.

Thanks fellas - will give the light switch rod a light sanding at the upper bushing and see how we go! - Should do the trick!

Did you drop the steering column to install the rod?
Any slight bend in the horn rod will make it rub and can turn the light switch while turning the wheel.

I actually took my whole steering column out - being a pick up doesn't give you much room in the cab to remove the light switch rod. Also makes it easier to work on a bench/vice to "dummy" fit the new rod and steering wheel before it goes back in, to see if it still sticks while turning the wheel.

Finished installing the new light switch rod today and after giving it a light sand on the square edges down the bottom and a light sand near the upper bushing, the rod slid in perfectly. Hooked up the light switch body, turned the steering wheel and everything worked spot on. Light switch did not move at all. Just wanted to say thank you to all for your advice - very, very useful!
