Default timing cover, side cover bolt list....

Getting things back together after setting valve lash, it had been a while since I took these apart and painted and did not list the location for the various bolts.

After and hour or so I came up with this, hope it helps someone getting there T together.

Looks about right. Just make sure the bolt under the timer is head up not nut up. It can short out the timer if installed the wrong way.

I concur with Mark especially regarding the bolt below the timer - reverse it.

One matter I would consider is NOT using that particular centering tool - you need the full size tool that actually centers the timing cover - that small one does not.

Thanks for the input on the pan bolts that go down through the cover and attach to the pan, castle nuts down. The first picture showed them properly with the heads up and threads down.

Now Steve what I'm not understanding is how the Texas T part T3009-T alignment tool that centers the cover using the seal recess to center the cam with the cover would not work.

It's using the very center of the cover were the seal is installed. I see the reproduction 3221 tools that alignment centers were the timer goes and over the cam shaft same idea just bigger.

The cam is in a fixed position, centering it closer in the timer cover were the actual seal will be installed and making a seal makes sense.

Hey I'm open to any input that would have me spent another $40.00 and shipping for something that will do a better job but to me the T3009-T will essentially do the same job.

Because of the differences in manufacturing, the consensus is that to properly center that cover, one needs to correctly "locate" where the timer body fits and is especially true if one is running a distributor to maintain proper gear mesh - a timer roller or brush doesn't mind a small amount of wiggle. I have a 5Z number Ford tool for centering the cover and it's the full size version. There was considerable discussion regarding this subject on the MTFCA Forum a while back.

Thanks for replying Steve, that is a fair assessment.

I tell you what, I am going to order one of the reproduction 3221 KRW timing alignment gauges and will compare where the timing cover align's with the front of the block/pan and how well my timer/rotating flapper install and get back here with my results between the two.

I have just come across the last thread, that states Gene French in Colorado machines a nice copy of the full size one ! He advertise on the MTFCA site also.

I have looked this up as I would be interested in purchasing a setting tool, but cannot find any advert.

Does anyone have a contact telephone number, webb site or e mail for Gene French.
