Kubota diesel ! I bought a new Kubota in 1975, it now has 9300 trouble free hours. Best money I've ever spent. Knock wood.

Go with steam, then you don't have to worry about the corn crap and soy bean crap going into the fuel. Even better, fire the water with coal to make steam.

I would say the spark problems are over, but new problems arise in a diesel conversion---i have been working on benz diesels for over 30 years, still drive the old ones, with the benz sometimes when #1 glowplug goes bad the glow system doesn't turn on(ignition problems), vacuum is used to shut off---had a lot of "can't shut my car off"---and with the 240 engine you had better match the motormounts to the engine, think the A ehgine can have vibrations you should drive a old benz diesel with cheap or bad motormounts---the windshield on my first 240D would rattle in the rubber with good mounts----and it's only 62hp, not hard to get with A engine not far from stock ----a 240 benz engine on stiff mounts can crack and shake off ----the 2.5 turbo diesel would be better, lighter, more powerful, less vibration
I also have Kubota lawnmower, actually 2, one split the block in 1/2 at 900 hours, the going strong at 4000 hours

I like my 1980 Diesel Rabbits, but all the windshields on VW Rabbits leak water onto the fuse box and cause all kinds of electrical problems. You need to drill a small hole at the lower ends of the windshield so the rain water runs out instead of inside the car.

One of my diesel Rabbits had worn out rings when I bought the car, and I didn't know that. I installed 4 new glow plugs and took off down the road. after 10 miles the engine took off accelerating on it's own, so I had to hit the brakes to keep the speed down. All the crankcase blowby had sent enough oil into the air cleaner box that the engine was running on it, and running out of control. That short drive burned my new set of glow plugs so they looked like they were cut in half with a torch.

I made an oil separator by running the crankcase vent into a 2 liter pop bottle, then connected a small hose from the bottom of the bottle to the dip stick tube, so the oil drained back into the engine. This worked great until I finally installed new rings.

Can we get some closeups of the engine mounts. I have had 300D Mercedes all my driving life and have often thought about replacing My A's tired engine with a 240D rather than spend 4K building the A engine I want.

The passenger side mount is pretty straight forward but the drivers side required a but of finessing as it wanted to occupy the same space as the steering box. As you cab see, I also boxed the frame. The mounts sit on 1" rubber blocks.

This underside pic is a bit dark so you have to look closely.

It will be a PITA if I ever have to remove the steering box. Will have to lift the motor and remove the mount.

Chief always wanted to put a "modern" Wisconsin V-4, in a Model A.

Hoovercw, I forgot to mention that the oil filter housing on the 240 will not clear the firewall so has to be removed. I made a mount for a remote spin on and bolted it to the side of the block just forward of the driver side motor mount using holes that were already there. Just thought I would mention it.
