Default Engine number

I just saw an engine with an original looking number that started with a star and then the letters RF xxxx star. Anyone know what the RF would indicate?

Gary,

As Fordgarage said, this would be a replacement engine built by Richmond Ford.

Those I have seen were built using a new diamond block which indicates hard seats in the exhaust; also the block will have the additional rienforcement around the rear main bearing; they used a new B-C Camshaft and a A crankshft that would clean up at 10-10. If you check out the lift on the lobes of the camshaft you will find the exhaust lobes have a higher lift than the intake lobes. According to a book I have the exhaust valves are set with a clearance of .018 to .021 cold and the intake valves are set with a clearance of .010 to .013 cold; the overall lift will be 110 thousands where a stock A camshaft is 87 thousands.

A bolck with a engine number *LBxxxx* would have been built by Long Beach Fordd (California).

on a replacement engine would the engine have the orignal engine number stamped into it or a brand new number all togather?

I have one that reads "(star)CAR4408(star)". Does anyone know what this might mean?
