Moose And The Mercury
No, I didn't hit them but it was close. It gave me a chance to see just how good the old shoe and drum brakes are on the 52 Merc and they were well up to the task of slowing me down enough to avoid the two huge dark figures that showed up ahead of me on the grid road tonight. Speedometer was reading close to 50 but I think its a little high. No skids or slides. Just slowed down real fast. Leaf picture from earlier today.

Re: Moose And The Mercury
Thanks, sure wish I'd had the Gopro on the dash to catch those few interesting seconds . The moose appear huge and dark. Good thing the old Merc's headlights work well and I saw them in time to avoid impact.

Re: Moose And The Mercury
The eyes on a moose don’t reflect the light from your head lights, like a deer. That and being a dark colored animal make them very hard to see at night. I’ve hit two with a trailer truck....not very pretty.......for the moose or the truck......Mark

I’ve come close to hitting them a few times in the last 25 years up here. They will destroy a car/pickup if hit squarely. |

.
Ya know, I don't believe I've ever seen a power pole set-up quite like that where the power comes in at the BOTTOM of a pole, continues UP to the fuse, on to the transformer, and back down to your meter, and on downward back underground toward your facility. DD |

Re: Moose And The Mercury
Ralph: glad you and the car made out ok. Looks like you need to carry the camera every time you take a trip in the Merc.

Ralph,
Glad you and the Merc are ok, although I would have liked to see who was built the strongest. Lol. |

Re: Moose And The Mercury
The old Merc is a lot more solid now since I've transplanted the good 53 fenders and hood on it. But I don't think it would have looked good after hitting one of those animals. Its a concern driving any vehicle at night but much more so in a 68 year old car that would be hard to replace.
