Have you used evaporust? Results?
Hi Barners,
There is some surface rust from humidity on my uncoated car body. I have an unopened gallon of Evaporust. Before I use this, are there any horror stories about doing body work or painting over this stuff? Thanks, Bruce/CT

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
Today I just pulled a carb and some spark plugs from soaking in evaporust for about a week, it worked ok, not sure about painting over it. I understand to make it work correctly metal has to be imursed or at least kept wet with solution. It seems body panels would be difficult to keep them soaked. My carb and plugs are just going to be for display.

works best with the liquid flowing over the item rather than the item just sitting in it.

I have been advised that a product called
Ospho is an excellent product to stop rust on sheet metal. |

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
I started using Evaporust a few years ago to remove rust from small parts of my BB Truck. I feel Evaporust has a shelf/use life. Depending on how much liquid you use in relation to the amount of metal you are trying to clean, the older / used Evaporust doesn't work as well as "fresh" stuff. I also completely submerge the part for a couple of days to completely clean it. I also use a plastic container with a lid to "seal" it from outside air. Not sure why, but it seems to help. After the couple of days of soaking, I wash the parts off with running water and then place them on a heat source or by the wood stove to dry the as quickly as possible. Once dry, I bag them in plastic ziplock bags till I get around to painting them. I have not tried to use it on sheet metal parts yet. I have done hundreds of small parts this way with no issues. I have even used a wire wheel on a few parts and the results looks like a brand new casting.
I use a two part epoxy primer sprayed to seal them. Paint seems to stick ok. Not sure how one would apply Evaporust to body parts and keep it wet long enough to remove the rust spots. I would love to know if someone has been successful using to on body parts. |

From the Evapo-rust site: How can I use it on a surface too large to soak? - A smooth paper towel can be soaked with Evapo-Rust and applied to the - rusted area. After this is done, cover with plastic to prevent evaporation. - When item is de-rusted rinse with water.

I used it on an NOS trans pan with very good results...sooper on some vintage hand tools also. If rinsed well paint will stick with no problem.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
Bruce, I use it quite a bit. For mid size body parts ie. window garnish moldings, I bought a large plastic tub from Walmart and soaked the parts til done, washed down with laquer thinner and primered, so far no problems. Are you going to Hershey? Pete/Ct.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
Takes about a gallon to fill a '40 banjo housing. Then you need a device to clean down inside, a few pieces from the Depot, then you need to get creative to imerse the entire outer surface. works great. Prior to the E-R I did the same with straight Simple green. These housings had been very greasy dirty and then left in the weather for some time. They came out great.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
See guys... I really wanted to know if it can somehow be used on vertical body panels. My body is pretty much assembled but in that time the stripped metal has grown surface rust. I like the safety of Evaporust but clearly can't leave the body to soak in it. I might have to turn to Naval Jelly.

Try a mixture of 3/4 cup of TSP to a gallon of HOT water. It's what is used to clean bridges. Very inexpensive and worth a try.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
I use it all of the time and I keep reusing it. I don't toss it out until it is just too gummy to use.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
I have used phosphoric etch and prep. It works very well. I have mixed it with water. And sprayed panels with good luck.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
Ospho is just a mixture of phosphoric acid. It'll etch the surface and turn surface rust black or remove it while you wipe it on. It protects bare metal well.

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
To get back to the original post. If he only has a gallon of the stuff, the question is moot. Save that gallon for dipping smaller parts; it works great.(I am on my second 5 Gallon pail, and yes, you can "wear it out".)

Re: Have you used evaporust? Results?
You can mix it with water. And spray it on the bare metal. It will help prevent rust. Before you paint you will make sure all contaminants are off anyway.
