on the road to French Lick
day 1 on the road: left home about 10:45AM; only drove 239 miles. when we stopped for the night in Dawson GA, the temperature was 100 in the motel parking lot but humidity only 38%. the Town Sedan ran like a dream, loafing along at 55mph in overdrive. did not use a drop of water or oil, but gas mileage was a little lower than I expected. might switch carburetors tomorrow morning and see if that helps.

"Loafing at 55." You might as well push her a little. How 'bout a mile a minute?
(I'm having trouble with the 10th Commandment about now. I love road trips ... and we are not on our way to French Lick.) |

got an earlier start today and drove 339 miles. after I posted last night, Judy calculated mileage on tank #2 of gas. it was much improved, so I left the carb alone. (same car, same load, same speed- go figure.) we said goodbye to the flatlands and the Town Sedan had to work a little harder in Alabama. beautiful scenery: pecan groves, prosperous farms and rivers of kudzu. finally saw another Model A (chicle & copra slant window) in a parking lot in Anniston AL. then here at Best Western, we found 4 Model As heading for French Lick from the Southside Atlanta club. today's photo taken outside a derelict stone building just south of Fayetteville. |

Day 3 on the road to French Lick
started late because we took a detour to Lynchburg & toured Jack Daniel's Distillery. 253 miles, ending in Owensboro KY. went to a great Cruise-in tonight at Lowe's next to our Motel. too bad they didn't give a "longest distance driven" trophy. unlike most Cruise-ins at home this one was less than 50% street rods. local car people referred us to best barbecue joint in town- off the beaten path, we would never have found it on our own.
832 miles total so far, the car is purring like a pussycat. added 4 ounces water to radiator this AM and 4 oz. oil to engine in afternoon. sorry no photos today, see y'all in French Lick early tomorrow.... Bick, it's a slant window flat firewall March '31 car. |

Re: on the road to French Lick
Chris, I know you have taken long trips in various Model A's but what have you found is the best body style for touring. The Fordor, Tudor, Coupe...?

body style opinions.....
hi Lurker!
Fordor wins for comfort and capacity. Coupe is great if what you are carrying fits in the trunk (it's BIG) but it's harder to access your gear in the trunk than in a back seat. Tudor comes in last. I've had 3 Tudors and they are beautiful to behold, but not as comfortable for me on long trips (I'm 6' and 195#). I even installed a Volvo driver's seat in one to make it more user-friendly. schlepping the suitcases in and out the back window makes you wish for more doors. more French Lick news tomorrow, I hope. it's late and we have to get up early so Judy can go to driving class. |
