Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
My Stromberg 48 Carburetor sometimes leaks gasoline between the base of the carburetor and the intake manifold leaving a gasoline stain on the intake manifold. I’m perplexed because I will drive the car for a few days no leaks and then it will start to leak what is the solution to stop these annoying leaks? Thanks

No electric fuel pump using the original fuel pump.

It leaks at the back and both sides of the carb base.

'common'..Reasons for leaks on a Stromberg; -throttle shaft with tooo much play..rebush or oversize shaft. -float setting not correct...check/measure reset float -gasket surfaces not flat/mating correctly...flatten gasket mating surfaces. -minute crack in body allowing seepage ...blast, check, seal as necessary. -tooo much fuel pressure....check for 11/2 to 2lbs pressure. -float leak...check float...replace if necessary On and ON. My #1 guess would be throttle shaft looseness. Remedy ...have Charlie in NY or Uncle Max rebuilt to original specs |

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
Hi Steve, Charlie/NY did mine and it works beautifully. Car runs like a top and never a leak! I'd send it to him and guaranteed no more problems.

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
You should be able to run the motor with the top of the carb of and the fuel level should not go any higher than 1/2x 32,so the gasket is only to stop evaporation ,There shouldn't be any fuel pooling down around the throttle shafts ,so I think Its a faulty needle valve .Like Hard times said you might need to test the pump pressure also ,Ted

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
HARDTIMES has shed good solutions. Note that the 48 & 97's take a different manifold/carb gasket. I use a grease on both sides of the gasket to guarantee of nice seal.

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
One other potential (and fairly common) wet spot could be from any of the three brass plugs at the bottom of the bowl for the main jet and accel pump check valve access.

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
As I've said on here before - my Stromberg 97 coffee mug leaks. Go figure.

The cause of an EXPENSIVE fire in my 35. The fire extinguisher saved the whole car but the engine area was damaged. Costly! kerk

Re: Stromberg 48 Carburetor Leaks
I sent the faulty carb to Uncle Max and Also another . He found the problem - a crack in the fuel bowl. He sent back both a rebuilt 48 and a 97 . I will be using the 97 if that is what you are asking but know the 48 is more correct for 35. The car is still in the shop being repaired. kerk
