Aluminum Fan Blades and Wheels and Powder Coating...
I am going to have my 1929 Wheels powder coated here in the near future.
Should I not powder coat the area where the lug nuts go or go ahead with it? Also I have a Aluminum Fan Blade for which I bought from either Brattons or Snyders which I believe has been powder coated. Is it best to remove the coating from the inside taper or leave as is? Thanks. Pluck |

You need to remove any paint from the taper on the fan for sure. The wheels can be coated, the lugs will be fine. When you torque the wheels it will just compress the paint if you take the wheels off and on the paint will remove itself from the friction. Some shops have plugs that can be inserted to the lugs to keep the paint off.

Steve,
You might check with Les Schwab Tires about powder coating your wells. Our local stores here send them to Bend, Or. and their price is really reasonable. The colors are limited but their Fruehauf Yellow is a dead ringer for Tacoma Cream. Of course they do black. |

Re: Aluminum Fan Blades and Wheels and Powder Coating...
I just took 10 Model A wheels to Les Schwab for powder coating. 5 Freuhauf Yellow, 5 black.
They charged me over $600!! I was shocked when presented with the bill. The kid at the counter said it is because they had to "sand blast" them and primer them. I saw a separate charge for sand blasting, for primer, and then the usual $32 for powder coating each. I called corporate in Oregon for explanation. They said they sand and primer every wheel now before powder coating, and that is an additional fee. So, Les Schwab is not cheap anymore at $60 per wheel. My local powder coater only charges $50 per wheel. |

If you use tubes in powder coated wheels check out this!:

One word of caution ... in case you use tubes and do not use a "tire flap" : On three of the 5 wheels I had done there was a very sharp piece of Powder coat left where they removed the wire ... Sharp enough to cut an inner tube. Since this is inside the wheel / tire I just chiseled off the sharp edges and painted the bare metal with paint. Just in case some water gets inside the tire! Id say seating lugnuts against powder coating no problem. seating fan hub on shaft different story, locking tapers like the fan shaft/hub require a 1 degree difference in taper to lock by interference fit. so the hub female taper is one degree different than the water pump shaft taper..any imperfection with the coating on the female side could give a false fit.Its akin to painting a rear brake hub before installing it on the axle taper.. |
