Default New block update 3.

I just finished boring the cylinders in the first sample block. They came out very well. Not a mark in them. I cut them .005 under so they can be honed to size. That pretty much does it for the top end.

Later today I plan to set the block up in an HMC and begin machining on the sides and ends. After this, I will be able to test fit most, if not all, external bolt-on parts. I happen to be running flywheel housings and heads for Snyder right now so that will give me fresh parts in house to bolt on.

That will leave the cam and crank journals and the main oil galley.

I will be sending pics out to people who have requested them.

Great work Tod! I for one thank you for doing that which is needed --esp. since so few today have the skills to even try what you're doing.

Don't be impressed. It really isn't very difficult.

Nothing is difficult if you know how. The know how is difficult.

tod, no need to allow .005 to be honed. i only leave .0005 - .001, thus requiring less honing, which is hard work if doing manually. goog luck on the rest of the project!

Thanks for the input Jim. On this first one I wanted to make sure it could be take out to stock size even if it needs a light boring first.

This morning, in between running production and running some errands I cut the water outlet on the side. I will be spending today and this evening getting the sides and ends cut.

Today, in between production, and at the end of the day, I was able to finish up the side water-outlet face and bolt on a borrowed water-neck. Looks good. Then I faced the valve cover side and drilled/tapped all those holes. I need to get some bolts to fasten everything on but I did put studs in and fasten on an intake and one of my cast iron tube headers. Everything looks good on that side also. So far, so good.

Sorry it is taking so long but my primary use of machines is production. It is time consuming to put something in without fixturing and plow through it. It will get there. Please be patient.

Not a problem.
We've only been waiting 85 years for a new engine. LOL
Glad to hear it going well so far.

It sounds like good news Tod. I've been following along with this for a long time and can't remember what kind of crank you plan to use in this new block. Is it pressure feed or original type. Somebody bring me up to speed.

Yea, I'm cranking these things by the dozen in my little garage

P.S. what I would really like is a diesel engine that looks like a Ford Flat head four that is about 200 HP gets 45 mpg and still sounds like a Model A

Still dreaming in WV soon to be head south

Mitch, I will be sending out some pics today. I am running to Fastenal to buy some bolts to bolt on the valve cover and side cover. I started to cut the rear end of the block but ran out of time this morning. Production comes first.

I did cut the front cover surface to length but didn't have time to drill and tap the cover bolt holes. I measured the length against a stock block and it looks good.
