Re: Am I crazy
I have used the small tent heaters and they work great. No problem if they get knocked over even.

Re: Am I crazy
Get a VW gas heater. Safe and LOTS of heat. They are on ebay. Here is the good one... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Eberspacher-...043898&vxp=mtr

Re: Am I crazy
The VW gas heaters are good but really big.
Placement is the issue, and you need a fuel pump with both a supply and a return line. Will it run correctly on E10? ................. |

The propane heater will need to be vented or you run the risk of CO poisoning. If you crack open a window is it enough? There is no way to know and the CO effects will be gradual, plus the open window leaches away your heat. I vote for following eagle's advice, or else wearing gloves, warm boots and long underwear. |

I have three exhaust manifold heaters I think. An Otwell "curvy" (these known to develop leaks which cannot really be detected), an Allstate "remove a shroud" complete (these can be checked) and a no-name shroud almost identical to the Allstate I have to find a fin manifold for. Of these, the "remove-a-shroud" seem to be the safest. I can't say I've tried any of these - next Model A perhaps? I understand on a rainy or snowy day these tend to funnel moisture in to the manifold which turns to steam which ends up as condensation on one's windshield. Hence the need for a 6v electric fan which was used seriously "in the day." But didn't an unvented heater of any kind have moisture issues? This like that "Perfection" Kero heater I use sometimes in the shop when I'm too lazy to start the stove? I've considered that the relatively good shape of the truck cab (and it wasn't all that great) was the fact that it DIDN'T have a manifold heater. One imagines the condensation forming on ALL the internal surfaces of the cab in cold weather. Dunno. Would be interested in comments on any or all of these thoughts as I'm kind of thinking about the next Model A (who doesn't?) It is a disease... Joe

Yes, I tried using a candle during the winter in my Corvair back in the 70's. I'd light it before going into the store to try to keep the interior warmer. All it did was fog up the windows. |

Re: Am I crazy
How was a candle going to keep your interior warmer? I never really noticed a candle putting off much heat.

Re: Am I crazy
Candle is one of those survival tools they say to keep in your car in the winter to provide SOME heat in the car if you're stranded and run out of gas. Can't say I have ever been stranded or in need of a candle.

Re: Am I crazy
I spent a year traveling around Europe in a VW camper in 1992 and heated it with a propane heater I bought in Turkey. It was a small unit that sat on top of a propane cannister. It worked well but I didn't run it when we slept or at any time during the day and driving. Later in Italy I got the factory propane heater fixed and used that the same way. It seemed safer than the cannister method. I would just warn about the fumes and probably not use it while driving.

Re: Am I crazy
I just used a small propane camping coleman heater on recent short trip. Worked tooo good, there is no temp control full on or full off. Easy to use/start/stop, has pull out legs to keep from tipping. I cycled it on/off and with the normal "ventilation" blowing through these As, I didn't worry about CO.

Re: Am I crazy
I've used them before, they work fine. The new ones are much better than the old ones.Propane gives off carbon dioxide and water,so it's not poison,BUT,it does remove the oxygen out out of the air.Loads of people die every year from just that.Anywhere I've used them has never had a problem with ventilation.I used them in old VW busses, cabover trucks, and plowing snow with old Macks.I'm very sensitive to excess carbon dioxide in the room with me.My eyes will start to smart.Just like the bubbles rising up when I drink a glass of tonic.I drove a cabover Marmon years ago with a broken heater.I was hauling spuds out of Maine, with an alcohol railroad heater in the trailer. The spuds would get the heater for 100 miles, then I would get it for 100 miles. That ran on methanol, and I really never found out what that put out for exhaust.Ventilation was not an issue in that truck anyway. With the efficiency and safety of the new little heaters I think if you use your head just a little you'll be fine.

Re: Am I crazy
Save your money. If you remember the woodchuck from Pa. said it was over.
I remember in 1965 driving my A from DC to Ohio. I got caught in a snow storm and it took me four days to get to Amherst, Ohio. Man!! was it cold in that car. |

I have a manifold heater - bought it from one of the suppliers - and it works well enough for us. We still require wearing gloves and and extra pair of socks - but other than the extra clothes, the 'chill' gives us an excuse to cuddle. |
