Re: Am I crazy
Looks to me like the south wind heaters are the way to go if you want a permanent solution. Era correct too!

Re: Am I crazy
Being a little facetious. Seems that many want to "close" this hole to preserve their chance at fine point. The vendors even sell a patch panel with the correct emboss to allow this to be done.
One of the reasons I have not taken a hole saw to my own firewall is the reluctance to take this step away: one modified, it becomes VERY difficult to "restore," and do it in a manner acceptable for fine point. But those other two cowls. Glad to see they now sell a repop heater door. Cuddle works for me too. Joe K

Re: Am I crazy
I would use a hot water heater and route the hoses through the wood floorboards.

Re: Am I crazy
I would also go hot water, I'm actually planning mine now. I bought an old south wind and I'm just not feeling its right for the car. They aren't that easy to install in an A and from what I read they are from a later date.

Re: Am I crazy
Hot water is the easiest and safest way to go. I use an old heater core from a 88 Chevy and a few feet of heater hose with a shut off valve to control the temperature. Route the hose through a hole in the floor boards. Works great.!

OK UPDATE on the Southwind. it will NOT FIT an A..it measures 6 wide, 9 tall and 12" in depth of which 9 3/4 in in the car and the 2 1/4 is outside in the engine bay..there is no way at all this will fit in a Model A ford....he is returning my check... you can see by the est of measurements there is no where it can go at all

Re: Am I crazy
From what I read they didn't fit right til around 35 or so. Connecting the fuel pickup to the carburetor also doesn't go so well resulting in a canister of fuel under the hood.

That is a bummer about the Southwind heater. That was the way I wanted to go.

Re: Am I crazy
I remember riding with an uncle in his old "A" sedan and had a kerosen heater tied with baleing wire between the doors in the back.

Carbon monoxide...when I was an EMT I saw many deaths from CO poisoning in houseboats and cabin cruisers.

Re: Am I crazy
I'd go with the Hot Water. Seems to work in today's cars!! "Vintage Air" has a small heaterbox with a fan. The only problem is it's 12 volts. But that can be solved.
It's about 10" X 10" and 6" Tall. Part Number 50515 VUH. Plus it has a heat control. Hope this helps. The Old Tinbasher. |

Re: Am I crazy
You could get an AC/Heater combo . Evaporator/heater core has 26 fins for air and 6 fins for heater .
