Hi: CarlG
Yes I used the rental puller I'm only 30 miles away from the Mitchell shop. The tranny looks just like he stock unit just the insides are changed.

Thank you for all of the informative replies.

'Sounds like if money is no object (although this is NOT the case with me), then having both the Mitchell Overdrive and the Mitchell "synchroed 2nd and 3rd gear" Transmission would be nice.

Since I am forced to pick just one, it sounds like I should go with the Mitchell Overdrive unit.

I have the combination transmission and overdrive. I drove it from Philadelphia to San Francisco . Had it in a 29 speedster with a completely stock motor. Not one issue, was a perfect trip. Having the ability to split the gears made all the difference in the mountains and the hilly country.

I have both the Mitchell cog house and O/D in my tourer with the standard 3.76 rear end and we've done nearly 16,000 miles in the past 2 years towing a camper trailer around Australia. I estimate the camper weighs about 750 kg (1650 lb). Cruising speed was about 50 mph and the car did it easily. I have a 5.5:1 head, touring cam and a Stromberg downdraft carburettor from a 1950's Holden. The ability to split gears was very handy in hilly country and made the whole thing much easier than it would have been without.

Photos of a Mitchell overdrive cutaway. The brass gears on the lower shaft is part of the synchromesh. Another photo of a Mitchell overdrive installed on a rear axle assembly ready to install in the car.

You are lucky my wife and daughter are a long way from you.

I've had the overdrive for 5 years. Works super! Especially if you use it to split shift. In overdrive and high gear the engine quiets right down and moves my Vicky right along 55 mph. My car also has a high speed rear end.

Installed the Mitchell transmission this past Fall. Took it for a ride and realized I was still double clutching. Once I stopped this I did enjoy the synchro tranny very much.

Trying to figure out which Mitchell over drive gear ratio to order. I have a stock 29 tudor, new motor, but not modified running a stock trans and stock ratio rear end. Sounds like most pick the 26% but I am wondering about the 36% over. Could my stock motor pull those higher gears? Any ideas?

My OD (not Mitchell) is 27% with 3.78 rear and a "warmed up" engine. IMHO, close to perfect combination.

Go with the 26% and I'd also order the higher 5.5 compression head.

NO, I enjoy double clutching and driving country roads at 45-50 mph like the model A was designed to do.
