Finally got the engine back in the 49. Have an offenhauser 4bbl intake with a 390 cfm holley adapted to it. having issues with the holley, and am thinking of running a 500 cfm edelbrock. right now the holley is on backwards because the stock linkage will pull on the passenger side. would like to hear what type of cable linkage would be best with the edelbrock, and will the edelbrock bolt up to a wcfb square bore pattern? Thanks for any advice to fet this thing running smoothe. Joe

I had the same setup (390 Holley on an 8BA) in my '36 3-window about 20 years ago. I ended up using a cable throttle from one of the "Hot Rod" suppliers (I think it was "Lokar") and made a couple of brackets that mounted on the manifold bolts, went in front of the carburetor, turned 180°, and hooked up to the carb. I didn't like it when I did it, I was never happy with it, but I never had one whit of trouble with it. I think that was because the cable assembly was quality piece; well-made and quite flexible.

I have a '53 Merc in the '34 pickup, running the 390 Holly. It starts instantly in any weather and runs great. It is mounted correctly with throttle pull cable on the driver side. Is there any way you can rig your throttle to work with the carb mounted correctly. What "issues" are you having with the Holly? Maybe it can be fixed.

I think 500 cfm is too much carb to work well at idle and low rpm.

Keep n mind that Charlie NY can reconfigure the throttle shaft crank so you don't have to run the carb backward. Contact Charlie for more info on the process.

This is how I adapted mine by fabricating a cross-over shaft.
After fooling around with a 390 for a while, I found that the Edelbrock is a better choice.
It is not oversize.
Stock engine that idles at 485 RPM with AFR's 10-12 at idle and 14+ at cruise.

Attached to modified carb adapter plate.
3/8" shaft supported by bronze bearing in a i/2"ID. tube/flange welded assy.

Nice work. Odd question, but I'm curious what that tube was in it's previous life? Looks like something from an antique door lock or small caliper gun/rifle.

Never had a previous life but was left over from a previous project.
5/8"OD x.062 wall steel tube (Ebay etc,etc.)
3/8"dia. bronze bearings from hardware store.

I bought a used Rochester 4G from a '53 Olds a couple of years ago. It came with a plate very much like the one shown to reverse the throttle pull. I believe that the one I have was commercially made for just this purpose. I really like how you did yours (the one I have is just steel on steel; no bushings). I was always gonna make something like you did, but I sold the car before I had a chance.

That's a nice setup you have there, do I spy the "lid" off the original Merc carb adapted to the edelbrock? Does this then have the stock Merc air cleaner on the back? Like to see a pic of that.
10-12 afr at idle? Thats quite rich "fat" I'm surprised by those numbers.

The 'lid' is a scaled up fabricated one that copies the original with the original top (2) components attached.
All the internal air cleaner passages have been 'opened up' as necessary along with added cold air induction.
