oil sender removal tool

Well, I was trying to help a fellow barner by sending him a sketch of a simple homemade tool to remove the oil sender. I had bookmarked it but when I went to retrieve it I found out it was from the old Fordbarn and not available. It was submitted by one of the regulars I believe. U shaped with a 3/8 square hole at the top and open end at the bottom to fit the square shank on the sender. I can probably draw a sketch if you folks can not come up with it. Thanks.

John, Bill Wzorek made them and sold them on the old Fordbarn. Proceeds went to Shelly. They were a beautifully built tool. I am sure he can help with info or drawing.

Here is the one from from Lawson Cox. Looks like you take a long open end-box end wrench , heat it up and bend it 90 degrees and weld a nut on top of the box end for a socket.

hi lawson; never did learn how to make the square hole... man that is pretty nice piece of fabrication...thanks ...kev

When I resharpen a drill bit most of the time i get square holes.

I believe that I have just purchased an old Snap-on purpose made tool for this! Won't be 100% sure til the mail man comes...
I have wasted a lot of time and a quart or so of blood wrestling with those senders over the years. Very similar to the home-brew 19Fordy posted, but shorter, looks like it'll be a close fit over top of sender from the pictures.

I never would have thought such a frustrating job would generate so much comment and great ideas. You guys are all fantastic and sent some good pictures. I wonder how you reinstall a sender without getting crossed threads in such a wicked tight area ? Car is in my little "station" at the moment but as soon as I replace the gas line I'll head to the warm basement where all the tools are as this may take time. Eventually our great NH weather will come to an end and for some reason I enjoy comfort. Any time the temp gets below 75 I have to start drinking anti freeze and carry WD40 to stay loosened up. Deeply appreciate everyones help and suggestions, Bob

If you had thoughts about replacing and did not know what you had now(not removed yet) would the #50 or #80 lb be correct for a Forty ?

Sender needs to match the gauge (for original senders). Someone posted recently that they were using a modern sender (#60 lb) with an original gauge (#50) and getting correct reading.

Todays update. I had to make a new temporary gas line in order to get the car to basement. Had three on the shelf but not correct on incoming pipe so had to turn down the crimped fittings from the old pipe in lathe in order to have stubs to attach hose with clamps. Poking around in my scrap steel, I found enough odd pieces of stuff and am now making a wrench somewhat like pictures you folks sent along . My success will tell the story if it works ! Just one hurdle after another I guess.

What size is the wrench? I've got plenty of old cheap tools I could bend.

The square shank you need to grip is 9/16...if you bend a 9/16 combination into a U you will be real close to the Snap-on purpose made tool. Just add an old socket at the top for a wrench extension. If you make one, the curve and spacing needed can be easily determined on a sender that's not on the car.

Plan "B"

After prying out the ill fitting repro floor board and contorting myself around pedals to get a wrench on the oil sender, I bought a 4" copper nipple of the same thread size and a threaded connector from Ace Hardware, and mounted the replacement Oil sender to that. Now I can get a regular wrench on it from the engine compartment. About $6.
