Default Cylinder head

I had a fella stop by yesterday with a cylinder head that he was having over heating with. The oval hole in the center of the head for water passage was not present. Has anyone seen this or know anything about them?

Early style Head- Oct 1929 changed Head and Gasket with elongated hole-for better heating and cooling. Service Bulletin pg 382. and Restorer M/J 2008 pg 15.
