Default Fender Well

What's the history behind the spare tire getting mounted in the Fender Well? I've read that the Pickup began this idea, and it took off -- is this somewhat true? Contractors complained that having the spare in the bed took away room needed for hauling.
Thanks

Fender mounted spares were invented WAY before Ford ever built his first pick-up.

Commercial Ford chassis including the cowl are shown in photos as customers ordered them without for example dump or utility bodies. The spare welled fender was included. Some of the largest sellers in Japan were supposedly chassis alone.

Some Pioneers even carried an extra wheel, mounted on the side of their wagons!
"Wonder" what's the origin of the word, WAGON?
