Amount of grease for 46 Driveline
I’m not sure what the PO did as far as greasing the driveline, or how much is already in the u-joint or driveshaft bearing, so the questions are:
Can the u-joint/clamshell be overgreased? If too much grease, will it get into the speedo drive/able? Can the driveshaft bearing be over greased? Again, I don’t know how much grease is already in these areas. |

into the transmission. It comes out rear of the split cover when full. The center drive shaft bearing only needs two pumps on the grease gun once a year. G.M.

51woodie:
As a follow up to GM here's what that centerdrive shaft bearing looks like. The first photo is a NOS Ford torque tube center bearing. The hole you see lines up with the torque tube grease fitting. The last 2nd and 3rd photos show what the bearing looks like with the rubber casing removed. If over greased, the grease will be forced out between the leather bearing seal and the solid drive shaft. The last 2 photos show what happens when the oil from the rear banjo leaks down into the driveshaft and dissolves the rubber. All that "goo" is the rubber. This happens when the car is "raked". Re: Amount of grease for 46 Driveline
Gentlemen. Thank you for the info. My car is not raked so I’m not worried about diff oil in the driveshaft. Because I don’t know how much grease is in the joint, I will make the assumtion that it was filled with grease when assembled, so only need regular greasing for it and the driveshaft bearing.
Yes, I know what assume does. |

Pull the "turtle" off the torque tube and pump grease into the u-joint. When you see grease at the "turtle", it's full.

A car doesn't have to be raked to get oil up to the driveshaft damper bearing. Lowering a car with rear spring or suspension mods can have the affect. Just be careful to avoid parking on a downhill direction for long periods too. Parking with an uphill direction drains any gear oil back to the differential housing. Parking on hills in any direction can be a tax on the parking brake so turn the front wheels to catch the curb & put it in gear if you do. Wheel chocks can be used too. Re: Amount of grease for 46 Driveline
rotorwrench: Very good tips. You can also install a special sea to prevent drain back but, it's a lot of work to install as you have to pull the rear. You also have to add a vent.

Re: Amount of grease for 46 Driveline
The driveshaft center bearing is held in position by the grease fitting on the torque tube. If the fitting was removed at some time the grease will not enter the bearing. The only way to test is to unscrew the fitting and use a wire to see if the bearing is there. Otherwise the grease just goes into the tube.
