It could be a lot of things. If fuel related it could be a clogged fuel filter or line. Or a fuel pump going bad. If ignition, I would suspect the coil or condenser, provided the points were good and gapped correctly.

Check for a good fat spark. Also check your fuel pressure with a gauge.

Does it have a ballast resistor? If it does, it could be that. I had one once that would intermittently fail.

I'd also be looking at the ht side of the ignition, rotor, cap(s) etc.

Mart.

High tension the plug wire side as opposed to the 6 volt side. I think the resistor is located under the dash near driver.

The resistor is located on the inside of the firewall just left and above the steering column

I also suspect ignition. What is the state of the distributor, condenser and coil? Perhaps your coil is getting too much voltage and breaking down as it heats up. Check the voltage going to the coil.

Engines with really low compression can be hard to start also.

Len...when you say "runs for a bit".....how long is that ? It could be the coil. I had the same prob, but it was after it warmed up for about 10 minutes and out on the road. There is a guy in Florida who rebuilds coils with modern materials and it works well. His name is Skip Haney.

I know it's got an electric pump, but is it delivering a good quantity of fuel? Could still be a partially blocked fuel line. Float valve good in the carb? And as above, has it got a fuel filter? Check it's clean. I would check these things first as it sounds a bit like it'll run till the float bowl empties.
All easy to check.
Martin.

I'll bet when you figure it out it will be ignition related. Start with a volt meter reading at the coil. It will tell you volumes about what is going on.

Yes, it could be ignition, but as scooter says, it could also be fuel delivery.
If it has a filter, then check it out closely, and replace if it don't look new.

If you don't have a filter, then install a new one, and then clean all the
crud out of your carb.
