Ok, late is better than never. I resolved the issues. The original trans sheered a tooth from first gear which caused the original problem. The second trans was one that I had picked up from a swap meet and the gears looked great. However, there was a bolt that had been dropped in the case and destroyed the case. Mystery solved...
