Distributor revision, 2 questions
I am currently overtaking the original distributor.
Mr. Les Andrews recommends drilling the distributor shaft vertically and horizontally a hole in order to lubricate the two bronze bearings through the distributor cam screw. He writes a vertical diameter 3/16 and horizontally 3/32 ", which seems me too big. I drilled therefore only 1/12 resp. 1/6 ". I think, the thin side drilling is sufficient for thick 600 oil, because of the centrifugal force. Does anyone have a comment on this? Second question: Under the "collar" of the shaft above must be a thin washer. It was missing from my. What is the thickness/clearance? (Picture sample copper ring.) The shaft has a vertical clearance play of 1/10 "! Thanks in advance for the always good replies!

Re: Distributor revision, 2 questions
I wouldn't use 600 wt lube to oil the distributor. Use motor oil. I would use a 1/16th washer, which is .0625

Re: Distributor revision, 2 questions
If you read the instruction book it says to "fill" the oil cup---most dist call for a few drops----once I realized this and filled the oil cup with a good squirt and went for a drive I saw that the upper bushing got lubed---the top thrust washer was wet with fresh oil ----no need for the additional hole--
I also saw that original shafts the cam boss was on the same centerline as the shaft,(less than .0001 runout) and both surfaces were ground to size, the repros that I had were off by .003-.006, and the shaft was not ground to size |

Good evening.
Thank you, Brian! Kurt, I am not sure, if I understand you right. Do you mean with "Oil Cup" the attached pictured oiler?

Oil your distributor regularly, using motor oil. Have never had a problem. Never drilled any additional holes.

Today, I have made a step ahead, thought of me. I also drilled the cam screw. And cut a small screw thread in it. For oiling, I now no longer need to release the central cam scew. Otherwise, because the ignition cam can be adjusted accidentally.

Re: Distributor revision, 2 questions
Werner has a small regular sized head screw covering his oil lube hole in the cam retaining screw. A nice touch.
Werner COULD buy the shaft and cam retaining screw already drilled, no cover screw. Not necessary but does prevent a sudden "squeal" should the upper bearing not get lubed by the side lube port. https://snydersantiqueauto.com/Produ...-a/distributor Quote:

Re: Distributor revision, 2 questions
In hindsight, you could have drill a hole thru the center of the cam screw.

That's it, it has a spring in it, you pull it out to reveal the hole for the oil.
