Default 46 pickup

Hi guys , just saying hello, got a 46/47 pickup on the weekend, I've got the cylinders soaking already in atf/varsol , she's fairly complete and should be a lot of fun for the kids and I to bring back to life. I'll be reading old threads pertaining to this specific series of pickup but if you guys can recommend any specific manuals, books, and parts suppliers feel free to comment (please include Canadian, does George Moirs carry stuff for these?) Have a good one!

The usual suppliers for the parts, although some suspension parts can be hard to find. Fred Wilner of Southside Obsolete has some NOS parts for these trucks. I was looking at www.chuckstrucksllc.com site today for hard to find items.

I have one of these and really like it. You don't see a lot of them around. The rear axle ratio leaves something to be desired for long distances, however.

The look is priceless. I am especially fond of the fender repairs. Brush of the loose rust and spray it with clear coat.

Sounds like you are not going the full frame-off restoration. So, my advice: First, get the truck running and driving safely and reliably with whatever electrical, brake, steering, suspension, transmission, engine and cooling work needs to be done, pretty much in that order. Then, if you do not love the exterior look as much as I do by then, get the body work done.

Going to need complete rewire; easier than it sounds, if you learn from those who have posted on that job.

I particularly like the implement tires on the steering axle. Looks like a fun project to me!

I would replace the hood prop with a broom handle, they don't hurt so much when they fall and bounce off your head.

Nice find! It looks pretty rust free in the photos. Enjoy the restoration and have fun! Also, post some pics along the way.

Congratulations on a great find. Should be a fairly easy restore. I'm wondering if the visor is original Ford, I know they were an option, just have never seen one.

Great find. I would not worry about the parts, most of what you might need is the same as 42-8 cars. Of course the sheet metal is trk only and the open drive shaft trk. Rest of the trans gears are the same as car. Those trucks are well built and balanced, easy to work on and fun to drive. As you progress, I am sure the front springs will have to be reached. For some reason that series truck had front springs that would go flat and cause steering wonder.

Great find!

My personal advice is to go to your local auto parts store before looking at a specialty shop (ie ChucksTrucks, Dennis-Carpenter, MACs, etc), as they can often get most of the "basic" parts at a much cheaper price. Things such as carb kits, brake lines (yes, I do mean the rubber ones), and even the master cylinder shuld be available to them at a much lesser cost.

As Jim had stated, they retained many of the same parts as the cars, and all trucks used the same body parts (minus the fenders) from 1942-1947. Unfortunately, not many reproductions sheet metal parts exist. But NOS and lightly used parts are out there!

The one thing I highly recommend you buy is the Green Book (I cannot for the life of me remember the actual name of it at the moment). It contains quite literally every single part your truck came stock with and lists the original Ford part numbers. Once you have the part number, searching for the part becomes much easier; both for you and for your friendly neighborhood FordBarn users
