Default New points not lining up

Putting new orginal style points in my uncles car...they don't line up perfectly. Any ideas?

Hello bosstime2,
Turn the plate over and loosen the 2 screws, you can then swivel the mount around to align the points.

try assembling it with the point block screws snug so you can still adjust the point block. get a rough point gap setting on the lobe and move the point block for best alignment square to the moving point. Think Ive actually had to bend the arm slightly to get them square to each other.

Be sure to use lube on the cam/rubbing block. I smear some lube lightly over the entire cam to keep rust away.

Make SHURE the point arm pivot post is not wobbly? loose. They are staked under the plate. Just TAP-TAP-TAP, with a blunt center punch. Mine were BOTH loose. It's a COMMON problem that's easily overlooked!

Tom I definitely will lube that cam and rubbing block. Bill W....thanks for a great tip as well. Car runs very well and we went for a mile drive and started hearing a terrible thud in the driverside rear. We both thought it was a flat spot on the rear tire. We got home to find that all the lug nuts were about two turns from falling off. Thankfully the wheel didnt fall off and the threads were ok. I tightened up all four wheels. My uncle had just aquired the car last week and it hadnt ran in 6 years

I hope the lug nut holes didn't get enlarged from driving with loose lug nuts. If they did, then you can use the washers to fill the gaps.

Looking at your points picture, I believe that you may have to enlarge the holes underneath the point block in order to move the block outward enough to make the points match in location.

Sometimes we don't know/forget features like this one. We don't often get into the innards of the distributor & it's good to have an old spare to diddle with & see if you can strip it down & put it back together PROPERLY. Same goes with carbs or "maybe" an old spare transfusionmission. The Dogs' excuse is that he has NO THUMBS!!

This for sure is the best advice for a model A owner to learn and repair these and other cars, I have earned my living in auto repair since the mid 50s, advancing up the learning curve over the years never knowing that I would ever end up adding software to cure an idle problem, (no challenge in that.).

Buying dirty rusty distributors, carburetors, etc at swap meets and turning them into usable items is a challenge that satisfies me and helps others,--- in addition finding parts that others are looking for helps keep valuable parts out of the scrap melting pot.

The dog could have had my thumbs in my apprentice days, my shop foreman accused me of being all thumbs LOL.

The points look fine. He just needs to loosen the two screws holding the points block so he can shift the block into alignment. Also the points pivot should get a drop of oil and the rubbing block gets some lube.

I guess I didn't realize the block was adjustable. I've never had to move mine. Thanks Tom. Ron W
