What rear end gear ratio are you guys running for red light bandits with built engines?

Back in the day, the 4.11:1 ratio was favored with a set of Lincoln Zephyr gears. Put some safety guards on for the rear hubs when the axles break. A quick change rear end set up might be a good choice.

Most folks favor more highway friendly set ups now days since most of us already killed our fair share of equipment back when we were young.

I like 4:11 gears (and I run a QC). Other factors come into play as well, what transmission are you running? What diameter and type of tires? Is it a stock rear axle/ closed driveshaft?

I have 4:11 in the rear now with Strange axles and a power trax posi unit
I think I may go a little lower maybe 4:30 or 4:40
Than when I flip the gears I’ll have like 3:80’s for highway

Sounds like you have it figured out! With a lower max rpm engine it will really wind up quickly, requiring a shift!!! If your avatar is the car in question, I would also consider larger diameter rear tires (but then that will raise the effective ratio, not lower it).

It had pretty tall tires that’s why I think I can get away with the lower gears

Best bet if you can get the change gears is trial and error. That's how it was done on the tracks in the past.

That sure looks like what I would consider an East Coast rod from the 50s/60s.

Love the left rear quarter fuel fill setup!
