Does anyone know what year this transmission is.

Re: Transmission ID
Go to Vanpelt Sales LLC and there is a transmission case ID section that should tell you everything you will need to know. Here is the web link. Good luck.

Re: Transmission ID
That looks like a Canadian Ford number. Check this site for them.

Re: Transmission ID
HTC that badly stamped could well be H I0265 (I is 1 in 1931-48 Fomoco serials), which would be an early '36 Zephyr. With nothing in sight of the actual trans, guessing is guessing. A '36 Zephyr would have basically same trans as a '36 Ford, with the parts that are different being externals that would be swapped out for use in other chassis like the rear mount. Show some pics!

Re: Transmission ID
It could be H-1 which would be Canadian 1938 but it is hard to tell. Canadian Ford didn't like long numbers so the kept changing the prefixes to keep the numbers not more than four to six digits,

Re: Transmission ID
The casting number on the back of the case could help a little. The 78 series case would put it in the 37 & up category. The 18 or 48 series would be the early stuff. Lincoln changed over to the odd front/side shift set up in the later 30s somewhere.

Re: Transmission ID
'36-7 LZ used basically same trans as Ford, differing only in mount and levers. '38-9 used the odd shifter and had the synchro type that Ford got in '39...all the pre-sideshift LZ's used Ford 28 tooth gears, I think and the "Zephyr gears" were '40 and up.
The shift to 48 case in 1935 seems not to have been 100%...I have seen a couple of original '35 serialed transmissions without the step for big clutch. That step (used on all the later transmissions) was only necessary on the small number of light vehicles that got the 11" clutch, so I assume Ford kept the early design in the parts flow along with the 48 for a while. On the trans here...we can so far see nothing to identify origin! |
