My Broken 41 pickup Pt3: The repair. Or not. VIDEO
After a mammoth 2 day editing session the next instalment of the 41 pickup broken axle shaft repair has gone live. I have some hiccups that caused some head scratching. I had some camera issues but managed to fill in the gaps. I have improved the audio and the lighting, which you will all be grateful for. Lots of hints and tips. I kept the video length down to just over 30 mins which means there will be a final part to come.
Thanks for watching and taking an interest in my bumbling around in the garage. Mart. https://youtu.be/8ToEl7O01P0 |

Bumping this before I go to bed. Bit light on views. This one contains a lot of fordbarn relevant info. Hints and tips etc.
Thanks to those who have already had a look. Mart. |

Mart, Perhaps I missed something. Did you install a new gasket to act as a shim between the banjo and the axle housing? Also wondering if you are using the correct Ford axle nut. Thanks for sharing your repair.

Re: My Broken 41 pickup Pt3: The repair. Or not. VIDEO
I was being lazy and was just going to bolt it back together using the existing gasket, even though it was in 3 or 4 pieces. It has worked for me in the past. (Don't recommend it to everyone as best practice, though, far from it).
What I didn't realise was a piece of the gasket fell off when I was cleaning the diff housing under the truck. So while I may have got away with it before that happened, the chances of it leaking now are many times higher. It's probably a dead cert. I'm planning to tear it apart one more time to replace the gasket. The nuts are a Philidas aircraft type locking nut. I use these in preference to the castellated nuts. I believe it is easier to always ensure they are kept tight with this type of nut. I am thinking of machining up some special washers to use with them. Mart. |

I may be incorrect but, I think using the correct thickness of the gasket matters regarding the correct meshing of the gears.

Enjoy your videos. Nice to watch someone rebuild something without throwing piles of money at it. A good "shadetree" approach.

19Fordy:
Yes, absolutely. That's why I wanted to just bolt it back together with the existing gasket. I was just fixing a broken shaft, not rebuilding the axle. All: Thanks for the positive feedback. Mart. |
